Independence, Iowa
Independence is a city in, and the county seat of, Buchanan County, Iowa, United States. The population was 6,064 in the 2020 census, an increase from 6,014 in 2000. History Independence was founded in 1847 near the center of present-day Buchanan County. The original town plat was a simple nine-block grid on the east side of the Wapsipinicon River. The town was intended as an alternative to Quasqueton (then called Quasequetuk), which was the county seat prior to 1847. The village of Independence had fewer than 15 persons when the county seat was transferred there. On Main Street, on the west bank of the Wapsipinicon, a six-story grist mill was built in 1867. Some of its foundation stones were taken from that of an earlier mill, the New Haven Mill, built in 1854, that was used for wool processing. Missouri Valley is a city in Harrison County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,678 at the time of the 2020 census. History Originally, Missouri Valley was known as St. John's (Findley or Old St. Johns), and established in 1856. This settlement was founded at the intersection of the Chicago & Northwestern, Sioux City & Pacific, and the Fremont, Elkhorn & Missouri Valley lines. Following the collapse of wild cat banks in 1858 and the near completion of the railroad, the town was moved 1 mile from its original location and renamed "New St. Johns". The town was formally renamed a second time soon after, this time being named after the valley of the Missouri River. Corning is a city in Quincy Township, Adams County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Adams County. Atlantic is a city in and the county seat of Cass County, Iowa, United States, located along the East Nishnabotna River. The population was 6,792 in the 2020 census, a decline from the 7,257 population in 2000. History Atlantic was founded in October 1868 by Franklin H. Whitney, B.F. Allen, John P. Cook, and others. Onawa, Iowa
Onawa is a city in, and the county seat of, Monona County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,906 at the time of the 2020 Census. It is the largest town on the Iowa side of the Missouri River between Council Bluffs and Sioux City. History Onawa was named for a character mentioned in the poem ''The Song of Hiawatha'' by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. Onawa was platted in 1857, and the railway arrived to the city in 1867.
