Golden City, Missouri
Golden City is a city in Golden City Township, Barton County, Missouri, United States. The population was 656 at the 2020 census. History Golden City was established in 1867 as a stop on the Butterfield Stagecoach Line. It takes its name from a nearby area known as Golden Grove. In reality the diggings were done by Indians mining an outcropping of exceptionally fine flint. Another rumor for its naming stems from the Indian dig sites, early settlers thought the flint mines were Spanish gold mines. It was re-platted in 1870. The Golden City Herald served the community from 1881 until Dec. 28, 1972. Dellard Surbrugg published the newspaper and ran a commercial printing business from 1940 until he sold the paper to Gene Wotkiewicz, editor and publisher of the Lockwood Luminary. 2019 tornado At approximately 9:30 PM on May 22, 2019, an EF-3 tornado struck the city. Monett is the most-populous city in Barry and Lawrence counties in the U.S. state of Missouri. The city is located in the Ozarks, just south of Interstate 44 between Joplin and Springfield. According to the 2024 census population estimate, the town is home to an estimated 10,108 individuals. History Southwest Missouri, including the area of what is now Monett, was inhabited by Native Americans of the Osage Nation until their forced removal to Indian Territory. Monett High School is a public high school, located in Monett, Missouri which is located in Lawrence County & Barry County. It is part of the Monett R-1 School District and holds grades 9-12. As of the 2023-2024 school year, it enrolls 739 students with a student-to-teacher ratio of 15:1. Academics Monett provides student-issued Chromebooks as a way to broaden their horizons. Monett offers a "GOCAPS" program - which provides students a chance to learn outside of the traditional school setting, while earning credit, and allows them to work with local business partners on real world, hands on projects. Exeter is a city in Exeter Township, Barry County, Missouri, United States. The population was 772 at the 2010 census. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all land. History Exeter was platted in 1880. The city was named after Exeter in Devon, England. The Frisco rail line ran through much of the Ozarks, including Exeter, bringing in tourists on their way to resorts, such as Mineral Springs. In 1896, the shortest railway in the country was built to connect Exeter and Cassville. It served as the main way into Cassville during the harsh winters that made many roads impassable. The rail-line was named "The Cassville and Western Railroad." Because the railway ran only 4.8 miles one-way, the railway had to rely on steam power to travel uphill back to Exeter. Cassville is a city in Flat Creek Township, Barry County, Missouri, United States. According to the 2020 census, the population of Cassville was 3,186. Cassville is one of the primary markets and job centers for an estimated 14,000 people living in the surrounding area. It is the county seat of Barry County.
