Herpetology
Herpetology (from Ancient Greek ἑρπετόν ''herpetón'', meaning "reptile" or "creeping animal") is a branch of zoology concerned with the study of amphibians (including frogs, salamanders, and caecilians (Gymnophiona)) and reptiles (including snakes, lizards, turtles, crocodilians, and tuataras). Birds, which are cladistically included within Reptilia, are traditionally excluded here; the separate scientific study of birds is the subject of ornithology. The precise definition of herpetology is the study of ectothermic (cold-blooded) tetrapods. This definition of "herps" (otherwise called "herptiles" or "herpetofauna") excludes fish; however, it is not uncommon for herpetological and ichthyological scientific societies to collaborate. For instance, groups such as the American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists have co-published journals and hosted conferences to foster the exchange of ideas between the fields. Michel Ansermet
Michel Ansermet (born 20 February 1965) is a Swiss pistol shooter who has appeared in two Olympic Games. Ansermet made his Olympic debut in 1996. He won his first medal in 2000 winning silver in the 25 metre rapid fire pistol. He was also active as a cyclist and as such he participated in the prestigious time trial Grand Prix des Nations in 1986. Georg Baur
Georg Baur (1859–1898) was a German vertebrate paleontologist and Neo-Lamarckian who studied reptiles of the Galapagos Islands, particularly the Galápagos tortoises, in the 1890s. He is perhaps best known for his subsidence theory of the origin of the Galapagos Islands, where he postulated the islands were the remains of a former landmass, connected to South America via Cocos Island. Early life and education Baur was born in Weisswasser, Bohemia in 1859. He spent his early years Hohenheim near Stuttgart. As his father was a professor of forestry, Baur initially planned to study forestry where his father was a professor. However, while at university he became interested in the fields of geology, paleontology, and botany instead. Edward Bartlett
Edward Bartlett (1836 – April 1908) was an English ornithologist and herpetologist. He was the son of Abraham Dee Bartlett. Bartlett accompanied Henry Baker Tristram to Palestine in 1863–64, and collected in the Amazon basin and Peru in 1865–69. He was curator at the Maidstone Museum from 1875 to 1890, and curator of the Sarawak Museum from 1893 to 1897. One of his most notable publications, though uncompleted at the time of his death, was his "''Monograph of the Weaver Birds (Ploceidae) and Arboreal and Terrestrial Finches'' ", of which five parts were published in 1888–89. His most notable herpetological publication, "''The Crocodiles and Lizards of Borneo in the Sarawak Museum, with Descriptions of Supposed New Species and the Variation of Colours in the Several Species during Life'' ", was published in 1895. Brady Barr
Brady Robert Barr (born January 4, 1963) is a herpetologist and host of Nat Geo Wild's '' Dangerous Encounters with Brady Barr''. He began working with National Geographic in 1997. Barr has also been the host for two other series, ''Reptile Wild'' and ''Croc Chronicles''. Early life and education Barr was born in Bloomington, Indiana, on January 4, 1963. He graduated from Indiana University School of Education with a B.S. in Science Education and later became a high school teacher. He earned a Ph.D from the University of Miami. Career Barr became the first known herpetologist to have captured all 23 extant species of crocodilians in his career. Barr is the author of a children's book about citizen science and American crocodiles,. Thomas Barbour
Thomas Barbour (August 19, 1884 – January 8, 1946) was an American herpetologist. He was the first president of the Dexter School in 1926. From 1927 until 1946, he was director of the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology (MCZ) founded in 1859 by Louis Agassiz at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Life and career Barbour, the eldest of four brothers, was born in 1884 to Colonel William Barbour, and his wife, Julia Adelaide Sprague. Colonel Barbour was founder and president of The Linen Thread Company, Inc., a successful thread manufacturing enterprise having much business in the United States, Ireland, and Scotland. Spencer Fullerton Baird
Spencer Fullerton Baird (; February 3, 1823 – August 19, 1887) was an American naturalist, ornithologist, ichthyologist, Herpetology, herpetologist, and museum curator. Baird was the first curator to be named at the Smithsonian Institution. He eventually served as assistant Secretary of the Smithsonian from 1850 to 1878, and as Secretary from 1878 until 1887. He was dedicated to expanding the natural history collections of the Smithsonian which he increased from 6,000 specimens in 1850 to over 2 million by the time of his death. He also served as the U.S. United States Fish Commission, Commissioner of Fish and Fisheries from 1871 to 1887 and published over 1,000 works during his lifetime. Walter Auffenberg
Walter Auffenberg ( – ) was an American biologist who spent almost 40 years in field research, studying reptile and amphibian paleontology and the systematics and biology of numerous reptile species, including alligators and Komodo dragons. Early life Auffenberg was born in Detroit, Michigan, in 1928. After graduating high school, he relocated to DeLand, Florida, to work on two small citrus groves owned by his parents. Shortly after, he enlisted in the US Navy and trained as a Hospital Corpsman in Corpus Christi, Texas. Upon his discharge he returned to Florida and attended Stetson University in DeLand, receiving his Bachelor of Science in zoology in 1951.
