Funicular
A funicular ( ) is a type of cable railway system that connects points along a railway track laid on a steep grade (slope), slope. The system is characterized by two counterbalanced carriages (also called cars or trains) permanently attached to opposite ends of a haulage cable, which is looped over a pulley at the upper end of the track. The result of such a configuration is that the two carriages move synchronously: as one ascends, the other descends at an equal speed. Falls Incline Railway
The Falls Incline Railway, originally known as the Horseshoe Falls Incline is a type of funicular railway (an inclined elevator) in the city of Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. It is located beside Niagara Falls at the Horseshoe Falls. The line was built in 1966 for the Niagara Parks Commission by the Swiss company Von Roll. It adopted its current name in the 1980s. Originally built with open-air cars, it was rebuilt in 2013 with enclosed cars to permit year-round operation. Unlike the other incline railways at Niagara Falls, the Falls Incline was not built to descend into the Niagara Gorge below the falls. Instead it links the Table Rock Centre and Journey Behind the Falls, on the Niagara Parkway just above the falls to the higher level Fallsview Tourist Area, including the Minolta Tower, the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort and several hotels. Hamilton Incline Railway
The Mount Hamilton Incline Railway was a funicular railway in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, climbing the Niagara Escarpment. It opened August 26, 1895 in Hamilton, Ontario. It was the second Hamilton furnicular, after the Hamilton and Barton. The site was on the concession road which became Wentworth Street, climbing the Niagara Escarpment, though it remains impassible to this day. In 1906 a new owner renamed it Wentworth Incline Railway (although many city residents called it the East-End Incline. The system had two tracks with two car operation with second generation cars used after 1910. The original cars were wood. The cars were quite wide (20.5 feet by 30 feet), so that small streetcars could have been carried, but this was never followed through. A number of structures were associated with the incline. Inclined Elevator
An inclined elevator or inclined lift is a form of cable railway that hauls rail cars up a steep gradient. Introduction An inclined elevator consists of one or two inclined tracks on a slope with a single car on each carrying payload. In the case of a two-track configuration each car operates in a ''shuttle principle'': it moves up and down on its own track independently of the other car. A car is either winched up to the station on the top of the incline where the cable is collected on a winch drum. Alternatively a car is balanced by a counterweight moving along the track in the opposite direction, quite similar to an ordinary lift. 100 Street Funicular
The 100 Street Funicular is an inclined elevator in Edmonton, Alberta. It connects 100 Street in Downtown Edmonton with Louise McKinney Riverfront Park, which is part of Edmonton's North Saskatchewan River valley parks system. Design The 100 Street Funicular's upper terminus is just south of the Fairmont Hotel Macdonald and descends parallel to a staircase with built-in seating and a bicycle rail.
