In the Republic of India, according to the Article 154 of Constitution of India, a governor is the constitutional head of each of the twenty-eight states. The governor is appointed by the president of India for a term of five years, and holds office at the president's pleasure. The governor is ''de jure'' head of the state government; all its executive actions are taken in the governor's name. However, the governor must act on the advice of the popularly elected council of ministers, headed by the chief minister, which thus holds '' de facto'' executive authority at the state-level. This situation is analogous to that of the President and the Prime Minister at the national level. The Constitution of India also empowers the governor to appoint or dismiss a ministry, recommend president's rule, or reserve bills for the president's assent. Arif Mohammad Khan (born 18 November 1951) is an Indian politician currently serving as Governor of Bihar since 2025. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and previously served as Governor of Kerala from 2022 to 2025, and as a Union minister who has held several portfolios ranging from energy to civil aviation. Lakshmana (, ), also known as Laxmana, Lakhan, Saumitra, and Ramanuja, is the younger brother of Rama in the Hindu epic ''Ramayana''. Lakshman Prasad Acharya (born 3 October 1954) is an Indian politician, serving as the Governor of Assam since 30 July 2024. He was the 17th Governor of Sikkim from 2023 to 2024. Being affiliated with the Bhartiya Janata Party ( BJP), he was a member of the Legislative Council from Uttar Pradesh elected by the members of the Legislative Assembly from 2015 to 2023. Lieutenant General K. T. Parnaik (born 28 June 1953) is a retired general officer of the Indian Army who is serving as Governor of Arunachal Pradesh. He is the first person from Maharashtra who take over as General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Northern Command.
