Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption ( ar, كاتدرائية سيدة الانتقال), is an Eastern Catholic (Syriac) church in Aleppo, Syria, located in the Christian quarter of al-Jdayde. The current church was built in 1970, replacing the old cathedral. Due to the Syrian civil war it was closed from 2012 to 2018. History The original Syriac cathedral in Aleppo was constructed in 1500s, and was one of the earliest churches built in the historic neighborhood of al-Jdayde. The church was originally called the Cathedral of Our Lady of Syrians and was the seat of the Syrian Catholic Patriarchate between the 17th and 19th centuries. It continued to serve as the main cathedral for the Syrian Catholic diocese of Aleppo until 1970, when the newly constructed Cathedral of Our Lady of Assumption was completed and the seat of the cathedral was moved there. Maronite Church
The Maronite Church is an Eastern Catholic '' sui iuris'' particular church in full communion with the pope and the worldwide Catholic Church, with self-governance under the Code of Canons of the Eastern Churches. The current head of the Maronite Church is Patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rahi, who was elected in March 2011 following the resignation of Patriarch Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir. The current seat of the Maronite Patriarchate is in Bkerke, northeast of Beirut, Lebanon. Saint Elijah Cathedral ( ar, كاتدرائية القدّيِس الياس), is an Eastern Catholic (Maronite) church in Aleppo, Syria, located in the Christian quarter of al-Jdayde. It is named after the biblical prophet Elijah. The church was built in 1873, replacing an old Maronite church. It was renovated in 1914. History Prior to the current building of the cathedral, a small church from the 15th century has occupied the same area. The old church was mentioned by the Italian explorer Pietro Della Valle who visited Aleppo in 1625 and described it as one of the four churches that were built adjacent to each other in one yard with one gate, in the newly created Jdeydeh, the Christian quarter. Saint Francis of Assisi Church ( ar, كنيسة القديس فرنسيس الأسيزي) also called the ''Latin church of Aleppo'', is a Catholic church in Aleppo, Syria, operating under the regulation of the Apostolic Vicariate of Aleppo. It was the cathedral of the vicarate and the seat of the bishop until 2011, when the new Cathedral of the Child Jesus was consecrated in the city. The church uses the Roman or Latin rite, is dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi, and is the seat of the Apostolic Vicariate of Aleppo (Latin: ''Vicariatus Apostolicus Aleppensis'') which was created in 1762 by Pope Clement XIII. The Catholic Church in Syria is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope in Rome. There are 368,000 Catholics in Syria (and its refugee diaspora), approximately 2% of the total population. The Catholics of Syria are members of several different Rite/language-specific Churches, including Armenian, Chaldean, Syriac, Maronite and Melkite in addition to the Latin Church, and there are separate but overlapping jurisdictions for the faithful of each Church. The Forty Martyrs Armenian Cathedral ( ar, كنيسة الأربعين شهيد) of Aleppo, Syria, is a 15th-century Armenian Apostolic church located in the old Christian quarter of Jdeydeh. It is significant among the Armenian churches for being one of the oldest active churches in the Armenian diaspora and the city of Aleppo. It is a three-nave basilica church with no dome. Its bell tower of 1912, is considered to be one of the unique samples of the baroque architecture in Aleppo.
