Mark Alwin Clements
Mark Alwin Clements () is an Australian botanist and orchidologist. He obtained his doctorate at the Australian National University defending his thesis entitled ''Reproductive Biology in relation to phylogeny of the Orchidaceae, especially the tribe Diurideae''. In 2008, Clements was a researcher at the Center for Research on Plant Biodiversity at the Australian National Botanic Gardens in Canberra. As of January 2012, it had identified and classified 1,992 new species. Karl Mädler
Karl A. Mädler (born 9 December 1902 – 22 October 2003) was a German paleobotanist and palynologist. Mädler was initially a pharmacist in Seifhennersdorf for a few years and studied the Oligocene fossil flora in the nearby region. From 1931 he studied paleobotany of Tertiary floras with Richard Kräusel and was a research assistant at the Naturmuseum Senckenberg in Frankfurt. Due to unfortunate circumstances, Mädler's planned doctoral thesis initially failed to materialize, but in 1939 he published a noteworthy article on Pliocene fossil flora (known as the "Klärbecken-Flora") found during the construction of the sewage treatment plant in Frankfurt. After WW II, he was initially an assistant supervisor in the Lower Saxony State Museum and from 1955 at the Lower Saxony State Office for Soil Research in Hannover. Edward Madden (botanist)
Lt Col Edward Madden FRSE (1805-1856) was an Irish-born botanist specialising in the mountain plants of the Himalayan passes. Life He was born in Ireland in 1805. Trained as a soldier he joined the army attached to the artillery in the East India Company around 1820. He travelled extensively in India in the 1820s and 1830s and believed he saw Biblical associations to the local flora. He did later tours in the company of Dr Hugh Falconer, basing themselves at Saharunpore. They also met and befriended the brothers Henry Strachey (explorer), Henry and Richard Strachey. He retired to Edinburgh in 1849, living at 26 Regent Terrace, an elegant Georgian townhouse on Calton Hill. In 1853 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, his proposer being John Fleming (naturalist), John Fleming. He was also President of the Botanical Society of Edinburgh for 1855–56. Moses Ashley Curtis
Moses Ashley Curtis (11 May 1808 – 10 April 1872) was a noted American botanist. Biography Curtis was born in Stockbridge, Massachusetts and educated at Williams College in Massachusetts. After graduating, he became a tutor for the children of former Governor Edward Bishop Dudley in Wilmington, North Carolina, returning to Massachusetts in 1833 to study theology. He married Mary de Rosset in 1834, was ordained in 1835 and obtained a post to teach at the Episcopal school at Raleigh, North Carolina. He became rector of the Protestant Episcopal Church at Hillsborough, North Carolina in 1841 and in charge of a parish at Society Hill, South Carolina in 1847 before returning to the Protestant Episcopal Church at Hillsborough in 1857. He died in Hillsborough, North Carolina in 1872. As a botanist, Curtis explored the southern Appalachian Mountains, embarking on a major expedition in 1839. Peter MacOwan
Peter MacOwan (14 November 1830 in Hull, England – 30 November 1909 in Uitenhage, Cape Province) was a British colonial botanist and teacher in South Africa. Early life and education He was the son of Peter McOwan, a Wesleyan minister from Scotland. After finishing school, he taught at Bath, Colchester, and Leeds, and in 1857 taught chemistry at the Huddersfield College Laboratory. That same year he graduated in chemistry from the University of London, becoming professor of chemistry at Huddersfield. Botanical work The year before, he married Amelia Day from Bristol. A severe lung condition, possibly asthma, caused him to move to South Africa and take up the post of principal at the newly established Shaw College in Grahamstown. His health rapidly improved and leaving chemistry behind he resumed studying botany in which he had become interested while still in England, having started a collection of flowers and mosses.
