Amsterdam (band)
Amsterdam are an English pop/rock group based in Liverpool. Formed in 1999, they had their first UK Top 40 single with "The Journey" in February 2005. The current band members are Ian Prowse (vocals/guitar), Johnny Barlow (lead guitar), Tony Kiley (drums), Kevin Spurgeon ( keyboards), Eimear McGeowan (flute), Anastasia Risnes (violin) Laura McKinlay (violin) and Dave Mastrocola (bass guitar). Biography Amsterdam were formed on Merseyside in 1999, and the following year won an ''NME'' competition to find the best unsigned band of 2000. They were also among the winners at the prestigious music business event In the City. Amsterdam appeared on an EMI compilation album, ''Mersey Boys and Liverpool Girls'', alongside Paul McCartney and other Liverpool musicians. The Beautiful South
The Beautiful South were an English pop rock group formed in 1988 by Paul Heaton and Dave Hemingway, two former members of the Kingston upon Hull, Hull group the Housemartins, both of whom performed lead and backing vocals. Other members staying throughout the band's existence were former Housemartins roadie Sean Welch (bass), Dave Stead (drums), and Dave Rotheray (guitar). The band's original material was written by Heaton and Rotheray. After the band's first album, ''Welcome to the Beautiful South'' (1989, recorded as a quintet), they were joined by a succession of female vocalists. The following artists performed lead and backing vocals alongside Heaton and Hemingway: Briana Corrigan for albums two and three after appearing as a guest vocalist on the first; Jacqui Abbott for the fourth to seventh albums; Alison Wheeler for the final three Beautiful South albums. Jacqui Abbott
Jacqueline Abbott (born 10 November 1973) is an English singer who was a vocalist with The Beautiful South from 1994 to 2000, following the departure of Briana Corrigan. With Abbott, the band released several top-10 singles. Amongst their most successful during her stint were " Rotterdam (or Anywhere)", " Perfect 10", " Don't Marry Her" and " Dream a Little Dream of Me". Abbott was discovered by Beautiful South co-founder Paul Heaton after she and a friend met him outside a night club. Heaton invited them to a party, where Abbott's friend encouraged her to sing. Heaton was impressed with her singing, and later invited her to audition to replace Corrigan. Ian Robert Astbury (born 14 May 1962) is an English singer, best known as the lead vocalist, frontman and a founding member of the rock band the Cult. During various hiatuses from the Cult, Astbury fronted the short-lived band Holy Barbarians (band), Holy Barbarians in 1996, and later from 2002 to 2007 served as the lead singer of Manzarek–Krieger, Riders on the Storm, a Doors (band), Doors tribute band that also featured original Doors members Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger. George Andrew McCluskey (born 24 June 1959) is an English singer, songwriter, musician and record producer. He is best known as the lead singer and bass guitarist of the electronic band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), which he founded alongside keyboard player Paul Humphreys in 1978: McCluskey has been the group's sole constant member. Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) are an English electronic music, electronic band formed in Meols, Merseyside in 1978 by Andy McCluskey (vocals, bass guitar) and Paul Humphreys (keyboards, vocals). Regarded as pioneers of electronic music, OMD combined an Experimental music, experimental, Minimal music, minimalist ethos with pop sensibilities, becoming key figures in the emergence of synth-pop; McCluskey and Humphreys also introduced the "synth duo" format to British popular music. Atomic Kitten were an English girl group formed in Liverpool in 1998, whose original lineup comprised Kerry Katona, Liz McClarnon, and Natasha Hamilton. Apollo 440 (also known as Apollo Four Forty or @440) are an English electronic music group formed in Liverpool in 1990. The group have written, recorded and produced five studio albums, collaborated with and produced other artists, remixed as Apollo 440 and as their ambient cinematic alter ego Stealth Sonic Orchestra, and created music for film, television, advertisements and multimedia. They notched up ten UK top 40 singles with three top tens, and had a chart presence worldwide. The group's name comes from the Apollo program and the frequency of concert pitch—the A note at 440 Hz, often denoted as " A440"—and the Sequential Circuits sampler/sequencer, the Studio 440.
