Historical Period
Human history, also called world history, is the narrative of humanity's past. It is understood and studied through anthropology, archaeology, genetics, and linguistics. Since the invention of writing, human history has been studied through primary and secondary source documents. Humanity's written history was preceded by its prehistory, beginning with the Paleolithic ("Old Stone Age") era. This was followed by the Neolithic ("New Stone Age") era, which saw the Agricultural Revolution begin in the Middle East around 10,000 BCE. During this period, humans began the systematic husbandry of plants and animals. As agriculture advanced, most humans transitioned from a nomadic to a settled lifestyle as farmers in permanent settlements. The relative security and increased productivity provided by farming allowed communities to expand into increasingly larger units, fostered by advances in transportation. Ahmed Hasan Dani
Ahmad Hassan Dani (Urdu: احمد حسن دانی) FRAS, SI, HI (20 June 1920 – 26 January 2009) was a Pakistani archaeologist, historian, and linguist. He was among the foremost authorities on Central Asian and South Asian archaeology and history. Adam Hardy
Professor Adam Hardy is an architect and architectural historian, and Professor of Asian Architecture at the Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University. He is Director of PRASADA, a centre bringing together research and practice in South Asian art and architecture. His research is largely in the history of architecture in South Asia, particularly Hindu temple architecture, as well as that of Indian Buddhist and Jain temples. Going against a prevailing tendency to focus narrowly, his work has embraced most of the subcontinent, and a very long time span, while at the same time involving detailed formal analysis. Professor Miles Lewis (born 1943, Amersham, UK) is an Australian academic serving as a Professor in the Faculty of Architecture, Building & Planning, at the University of Melbourne, Australia. He is one of Australia's most notable Architectural historians, and a member of the Order of Australia. Charles Jencks
Charles Alexander Jencks (21 June 1939 – 13 October 2019) was an American cultural theorist, landscape designer, architectural historian, and co-founder of the Maggie’s Cancer Care Centres. He published over thirty books and became famous in the 1980s as a theorist of Postmodernism. Jencks devoted time to landform architecture, especially in Scotland. These landscapes include the ''Garden of Cosmic Speculation'' and earthworks at Jupiter Artland outside Edinburgh. Jennifer Taylor (architect)
Jennifer Evelyn Taylor (; 12 April 1935 – 7 December 2015) was an Australian architect, professor, critic and author who made a significant contribution to writing on contemporary Australian, Japanese and South Pacific architecture. Biography Australian by birth, Taylor began studying architecture at the School of Architecture, Oxford Brookes University after taking a course in nursing. She then completed a B.Arch (1967) and M.Arch (1969) at the University of Washington, Seattle. Her Master of Architecture (History) was in part by thesis entitled, ''An Inquiry into Some Aspects of Recent Unorthodox Trends in Architecture''. Stanford Anderson
Stanford Anderson (1934 – January 5, 2016) was an American architectural historian and professor. He taught architectural history, theory, and urban form at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1963 until 1991, and again from 2005 until the end of 2014 upon retirement. As an author, he has been collected by libraries. Education Anderson received his architectural degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 1958, and then went on to study as a Fulbright Scholar in Munich in 1961–62. He completed a Ph.D. in art history from Columbia University on ''Peter Behrens and the New Architecture of Germany: 1900-1917''. The ''Conservation Plan'' is an important publication written by James Semple Kerr in 1982, and revised many times. It was a landmark in Australian conservation. James Semple Kerr
James Semple Kerr (6 July 1932 – 15 October 2014) was an architectural historian and heritage practitioner in Australia, who was prominent in the drafting of the original Burra Charter and its subsidiary documents, and developing standards for conservation practice, particularly in relation to conservation assessments and management reports such as conservation management plans. Kerr's influence in the conservation movement is most notable for his publication of the ''Conservation Plan'', which has guided building conservation in Australia and around the world. Work and contributions Kerr undertook a doctorate at the Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies, at the University of York in 1974. Liu Xianjue
Liu Xianjue (; 12 December 1931 – 16 May 2019) was a Chinese architectural historian and educator. He studied under all "Four Modern Masters in Architecture" of China and taught at Southeast University for more than 50 years. He advocated for the protection of architectural heritage in Nanjing and advised the government of Macau in its successful application for World Heritage status for the Historic Centre of Macau.
