List Of WNBA Annual Blocks Leaders
In basketball, a blocked shot occurs when a defender deflects or stops a field goal attempt without committing a foul. The Women's National Basketball Association's (WNBA) block title is awarded to the player with the highest blocks per game average in a given season. To qualify for the blocks title, the player must appear in at least 70 percent of the season's games (28 games in typical 40-game season) or record 35 blocks. Brittney Griner holds the all-time records for total blocks (129) and blocks per game (4.04) in a season; achieved in the 2014 season and 2015 season respectively. Griner and Margo Dydek have won the most block titles, with eight. Lisa Leslie, Sylvia Fowles, Candace Parker, and A'ja Wilson have also won the title more than once. Elena Viktorovna Baranova (; born 28 January 1972) is a Russian former professional basketball player. She is a former Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) player, where she became the first player from Europe in 1997 WNBA inaugural season, the first All-Star from Russia in 2001 and played for the New York Liberty until the 2005 season. Career Baranova was born in the Kirghiz Soviet Socialist Republic. She started playing professional basketball at age 16, was included to the Soviet national team at the age of 17, won European Championship at the age of 19 in 1991, and became the Olympic champion at the age of 20 in 1992. The Phoenix Mercury are an American professional basketball team based in Phoenix, Arizona. Maria Alexandrovna Stepanova (; born 23 February 1979) is a Russian professional and Olympic basketball player. In the United States, she played for the Phoenix Mercury in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). San Antonio Silver Stars
The San Antonio Stars were a professional basketball team based in San Antonio, playing in the Western Conference in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The team was founded in Salt Lake City, Utah, as the Utah Starzz before the league's inaugural 1997 season began; then moved to San Antonio before the 2003 season and became the San Antonio Silver Stars, then simply the San Antonio Stars in 2014. 2003 WNBA Season
The 2003 WNBA season was the Women's National Basketball Association's seventh season. It was the first season in which teams either folded or relocated, as well as the first to have teams that were not co-owned with NBA teams. The Orlando Miracle relocated to Connecticut and became the Connecticut Sun, the Utah Starzz relocated to San Antonio, Texas and became the San Antonio Silver Stars. Meanwhile, both the Miami Sol and the Portland Fire folded, while the Charlotte Sting became the second WNBA team without a brother NBA team.
