Utah
Utah is a landlocked state in the Mountain states, Mountain West subregion of the Western United States. It is one of the Four Corners states, sharing a border with Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico. It also borders Wyoming to the northeast, Idaho to the north, and Nevada to the west. In comparison to all the U.S. states and territories, Utah, with a population of just over three million, is the List of U.S. states and territories by area, 13th largest by area, the List of U.S. states and territories by population, 30th most populous, and the List of U.S. states by population density, 11th least densely populated. John Willard Clawson
John Willard "Will" Clawson (January 18, 1858 – April 6, 1936) was an American, Utah-based artist, in the late-19th and early 20th-century. Biography Clawson was born to Hiram B. Clawson and his wife, the former Alice Young. Alice was a daughter of Brigham Young, and Clawson was born in the blue room of the Beehive House, which was built by Brigham Young for his wives and their families. Clawson studied at the University of Deseret, among his notable teachers there was George M. Ottinger. He married Mary Clark in the LDS Church Endowment House shortly before his departure for New York City to study at the National Academy of Design. He then returned to Salt Lake City where he was primarily involved in portrait painting although he preferred doing landscapes. In 1891 Clawson went to Paris where he studied at the Académie Julian and then the École des Beaux-Arts. While at the later institution he received instruction from Claude Monet and Édouard Manet. John Hafen
John Hafen (March 22, 1856 – June 3, 1910) was a Swiss-born American artist, primarily of landscapes and portraits. As a child, Hafen immigrated to the United States from Switzerland and settled in Utah. There, he demonstrated artistic abilities from an early age. In 1890, he was one of a group of "art Missionaries (LDS Church), missionaries" who studied at the Académie Julian in Paris under the sponsorship of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church), in preparation for painting murals at the nearly completed Salt Lake Temple. After returning home, Hafen painted landscapes of rural Utah and portraits of LDS General authority, General Authorities. He suffered intense financial difficulty throughout his life and did not receive much recognition as an artist until a few years before his death. Alvin Gittens
Alvin Loraine Gittins (17 January 1922 – 7 March 1981) was an English-born artist who was a professor at the University of Utah (U of U). He has been described as "one of he United Statesgreatest portrait artists ever". Life and career Gittins was born in Kidderminster, Worcestershire, England. He attended art school in London. Gittins was raised in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) in England. He first came to the United States in 1946 and graduated from Brigham Young University in 1947. He was appointed a member of the U of U art faculty in 1947. From 1956 to 1962 Gittins was head of the U of U's art department. Gittins painted 89 portraits of people connected with the U of U and at least one of his portraits hangs in almost every campus building. Arnold Friberg
Arnold Friberg (December 21, 1913 – July 1, 2010) was an American illustrator and painter noted for his religious and patriotic works. He is perhaps best known for his 1975 painting ''The Prayer at Valley Forge'', a depiction of George Washington praying at Valley Forge. He is also well known for his 15 "pre-visualization" paintings for the Cecil B. DeMille film '' The Ten Commandments'' which were used to promote the film worldwide and for which he received an Academy Award nomination. He has been admitted as a lifetime member of the Royal Society of Arts. He also did a series of paintings depicting scenes from the Book of Mormon for Adele Cannon Howells, the Primary President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Kathryn Jean Finlayson is an artist from Salt Lake City, Utah. She is primarily known for her surrealistic paintings, which feature a diversity of styles and subject, including fantastic conceptualization of landscapes and animals, particularly horses. She stated " The ideas for my art come from dreams and imagination, and sometimes from impressions of memories of childhood." Her media is primarily oil paint. Finlayson was born in Denver, Colorado. Lynn Fausett
Lynn Fausett February 27, 1894 – August 27, 1977) was an American painter. He attended and later became president of the Art Students League in New York City. He painted murals in the Nebraska State Capitol and St. Bartholomew's Church. Fausett is also the muralist of ''The First Meeting of the Primary Association'' depicting the establishment of the Primary Association in the Farmington Rock Chapel for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Early life Lynn Fausett was born on February 27, 1894, in Price, Utah Territory, to George A. Fausett and Helen Josephine Bryner. He was the oldest of their eight children. Dean Fausett
William Dean Fausett (July 4, 1913 – December 13, 1998) was an American painter. His career spanned over six decades. He painted notable figures like Dwight D. Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Grandma Moses, Ezra Taft Benson, and Sir Alexander Fleming. His brother Lynn Fausett was also a painter. Fausett also purchased the historic house of Cephas Kent, Jr. in Dorset, Vermont and was instrumental in it the forming of the Kent Neighborhood Historic District. Early life Dean Fausett was born in Price, Utah, in 1913. His parents were George A. Fausett and Helen Josephine Bryner Fausett. John Bryn Williams (born 1977), known as John B, is an English disc jockey and electronic music producer. He is widely recognised for his eccentric clothing, wild hair, and his production of several cutting edge drum and bass tracks. John B ranked number 76 in '' DJ Magazine''s 2010 Top 100 DJs annual poll, announced on 27 October 2010. Career Williams was born on 12 July 1977 in Maidenhead, Berkshire. Avard Fairbanks
Avard Tennyson Fairbanks (March 2, 1897 – January 1, 1987) was a 20th-century American sculptor. Over his eighty-year career, he sculpted over 100 public monuments and hundreds of artworks. Fairbanks is known for his religious-themed commissions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) including the ''Three Witnesses'', ''Tragedy of Winter Quarters'', and several ''Angel Moroni'' sculptures on spires of the church's temples. Additionally, Fairbanks sculpted over a dozen Abraham Lincoln-themed sculptures and busts among which the most well-known reside in the U.S. Supreme Court Building and Ford's Theatre Museum.
