By-election
A by-election, also known as a special election in the United States and the Philippines, or a bypoll in India, is an election used to fill an office that has become vacant between general elections. A vacancy may arise as a result of an incumbent’s death or resignation, or when the incumbent becomes ineligible to continue in office (because of a recall, a prohibited dual mandate, criminal conviction, or failure to maintain a minimum attendance), or when an election is invalidated by voting irregularities. In some cases a vacancy may be filled by a method other than a by-election (such as the outgoing member's party nominating a replacement) or the office may be left vacant. These elections can be held anytime in the country. John George Edward Henry Douglas Sutherland Campbell, 9th Duke of Argyll (6 August 1845 – 2 May 1914), known by the courtesy title Marquess of Lorne, by which he was known between 1847 and 1900, was a British nobleman who was Governor General of Canada from 1878 to 1883. He was the husband of Princess Louise, fourth daughter of Queen Victoria. He was the first president of Rangers Football Club, thanks to his Argyll ties to the original founders of the football club. 1900 Holborn By-election
The Holborn by-election was a Parliamentary by-election held on 23 March 1900. The constituency returned one Member of Parliament (MP) to the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, elected by the first past the post voting system. The seat had become vacant following the death of the incumbent Conservative MP, Sir Charles Hall on 9 March. Hall had been Member of Parliament for the constituency since an 1892 by-election. Candidates The Conservative candidate was James Remnant. He was unanimously selected at a meeting of the Holborn Conservative Association on Thursday 15 March. Remnant had been the Moderate London County Council member for Holborn since 1892, and was chairman of the Theatres Committee of the council. Sir Thomas Arthur Bramsdon (27 February 1857 – 29 September 1935) was a British solicitor from Portsmouth and a Liberal Party politician who was elected for four non-consecutive terms as a Member of Parliament (MP) for Portsmouth constituencies. Walter Owen Clough (15 September 1846 – 17 April 1922) was a British Liberal Party (UK), Liberal Party politician. Clough was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire on 15 September 1846. He was elected at the 1892 United Kingdom general election, 1892 general election as a Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament for Portsmouth (UK Parliament constituency), Portsmouth. Sir John Batty Tuke PRCPE FRSE LLD (9 January 1835 – 13 October 1913) was one of the most influential psychiatrists in Scotland in the late nineteenth century, and a Unionist Member of Parliament (MP) from 1900 to 1910. Sir William Overend Priestley (24 June 1829 – 11 April 1900) was a British physician and Conservative Party (UK), Conservative Party politician. He served as Member of Parliament (United Kingdom), Member of Parliament (MP) for Edinburgh and St Andrews Universities (UK Parliament constituency), Edinburgh and St Andrews Universities from 1896 to 1900. Priestley was born in Leeds and trained in Edinburgh as an obstetrician and gynecologist.
