Tamil Cinema
Tamil cinema, also known as Kollywood is a part of Indian Cinema; primarily engaged in production of motion pictures in the Tamil language. Based out of the Kodambakkam neighbourhood in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, it is popularly called ''Kollywood'' - a portmanteau of the words Kodambakkam and Hollywood. The first Tamil silent film, '' Keechaka Vadham'', was directed by R. Nataraja Mudaliar in 1918. The first Tamil talking feature film, '' Kalidas'', a multilingual directed by H M Reddy was released on 31 October 1931, less than seven months after India's first talking motion picture '' Alam Ara''. By the end of the 1930s, the legislature of the State of Madras passed the Entertainment Tax Act of 1939. Kali (; sa, काली, ), also referred to as Mahakali, Bhadrakali, and Kalika ( sa, कालिका), is a Hindu goddess who is considered to be the goddess of ultimate power, time, destruction and change in Shaktism. In this tradition, she is considered as a ferocious form of goddess Mahadevi, the supreme of all powers, or the ultimate reality. ''Sathi Murali'' was a 1941 Tamil-language film directed by Vadivelu Naicker. It starred M. K. Radha, M. R. Santhanalakshmi and T. R. Mahalingam in the lead roles. No print of the film is known to survive, making it a lost film. Production During the late 1930s and the 1940s, there were a lot of movies with social messages such as ''Thyagabhoomi''. Sathi Murali targeted caste-based discrimination in society. Sathi Murali was the second film for singer and actor T. R. Mahalingam who later became one of the leading stars of Tamil cinema. Swaminathan Vaidyanathan (26 June 1904—11 January 1963), known by his stage name Serukulathur Sama, was an Indian stage and film actor who was primarily known for playing the role of the Hindu god Krishna in Tamil language Hindu mythological films of the 1930s and 1940s. Early life Born in the village Serukalathur in Thiruvarur district to Mirasudar (Manager of own farm) Vaidyanadhaiyer, his birth name was Swaminathan. Based on the war between the Pandava prince Arjuna and the god Shiva, the film stars M. R. Krishnamurthi, Thirukharaivaasal Subbulakshmi, Bhavani K. Sambamurthi and T. M. Ramasami Pillai. Durairaj and M. R. Swaminathan. The story is based on a 1933 American film ''Roman Scandals''. Plot In the film, N. S. Krishnan used to give musical discourses on the story of King Vikramaditya, a legendary emperor of ancient India. NSK takes the emperor as his role model. One day he had a dispute with his friend M.
