Talysh People
The Talysh people ( tly, Tolışon, script=Latn تالشان; az, Talışlar; fa, تالشان) are an Iranian ethnic group indigenous to a region shared between Azerbaijan and Iran which spans the South Caucasus and the southwestern shore of the Caspian Sea. They speak the Talysh language, one of the Northwestern Iranian languages. It is spoken in the northern regions of the Iranian provinces of Gilan and Ardabil and the southern parts of the Republic of Azerbaijan. The areas in the Republic of Azerbaijan where Northern Talysh is spoken was historically known as Talish-i Gushtasbi. In Iran there is a Talesh County in Gilan Province. Origins The Talyshis have traditionally inhabited the Talish district in the southwestern part of the Caspian Sea, which is usually considered to extend more than 150 km. Fakhraddin Aboszoda
Fakhraddin Aboszoda (; 1956 – 2020) was a Talysh people, Talysh rights activist and historian. He was a leader of the Talysh national movement. He was a chairman of the ''majlis'' (parliament) of the Talysh-Mughan Autonomous Republic within the Republic of Azerbaijan. After the creation of the Talysh-Mughan Autonomous Republic, Aboszoda joined the Talysh movement. He took a central role in leadership after Alikram Hummatov asked him to write the Republic's constitution. He helped create its ''majlis'', first convened in August 1993, and later became its chairman. The first orders of the majlis were to transfer military power to civilian authorities, officially declare the autonomous Talysh-Mughan republic as a constituent part of Azerbaijan, the election of Hummatov as president and the appointment of Aboszoda as head of the ''majlis''. Shirali Muslimov
Shirali Farzali oghlu Muslumov, also spelt as Muslimov ( tly, Şirəli Fərzəli zoə Müslümov, script=Latn; az, Şirəli Fərzəli oğlu Müslümov, pronounced ; russian: Ширали Фарзали оглы Муслимов; allegedly March 26, 1805? – September 2, 1973) was an Azerbaijani shepherd of Talysh ethnicity from the village of Barzavu in the Lerik District of Azerbaijan, a mountainous area near the Iranian border. He claimed to be the oldest person who ever lived when he died on September 2, 1973, at the alleged age of 168. Shirali Muslumov was married 3 times and had 23 children. In 1966, the studio Azerbaijanfilm shot a documentary film about him, ''Shirali descended from the mountain''. He became a father of his daughter when he was 136 years old. Idrak Abbasov
Idrak Abbasov (born c. 1976) is an Azerbaijani journalist who works for the newspaper ''Zerkalo'', one of Azerbaijan's few newspapers not controlled by the government of President Ilham Aliyev. '' The Guardian'' described him as one of the nation's "leading journalists". He lives in Sulutəpə, a settlement in Baku, the nation's capital. Known for his reporting on forced evictions in Baku, Abbasov was badly beaten in 2012, allegedly by SOCAR security personnel. SOCAR reporting In 2011, Abbasov began reporting on protests against SOCAR, the state oil company, by Sulutəpə citizens whose homes were being demolished by the company. Rovshan Janiyev
Rovshan Janiyev ( az, Rövşən Rafiq oğlu Canıyev, russian: Ровшан Рафик оглы Джаниев; 27 January 1975 – 18 August 2016), also known as Rovshan Lankaransky ( az, Rövşən Lənkəranski, links=no, russian: Ровшан Ленкоранский, links=no), was a Talysh influential Azerbaijani gangster. Early life When Janiyev was 17 years old, his father, a policeman, was murdered by local gangsters whom he was investigating. In 1996 during the court hearing, upon hearing the accused threatening his family, Janiyev pulled out a gun and killed him in court. He was sentenced to two years in prison. Criminal acts Later in 2000, he shot a prominent Baku crime boss in broad daylight and was subsequently beaten so severely that he developed a mental illness. Hooshang Amirahmadi ( fa, هوشنگ امیراحمدی; born May 24, 1947) is an Iranian American academic and political analyst. Amirahmadi is a professor of the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, at Rutgers University. He has stepped forward as a candidate for Iranian presidential elections in 2005, 2013 and 2017. Career Amirahmadi is the founder and president of American–Iranian Council, holds a Ph.D. in planning and international development from Cornell University and is a professor of the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University. Haji Allahshükür Hummat Pashazade ( az, Allahşükür Hümmət Paşazadə) is the Sheikh ul-Islam and Grand Mufti of the Caucasus which includes the Republic of Azerbaijan, the Republic of Georgia, and Dagestan, Kabardino-Balkaria, Ingushetia, Chechnya, Karachay–Cherkessia, and Adygea in the Russian Federation. He is also the chairman of the Religious Council of the Caucasus. Novruzali Mammadov
Novruzali Khanmammad oğlu Mammadov ( az, Novruzəli Xanməmməd oğlu Məmmədov; March 1942 - 17 August 2009) was an Azerbaijani philologist, journalist and activist of Talysh ethnicity. He was the founder and editor of the now-defunct newspaper ''Tolyshi Sado'' (Voice of the Talysh). Mammadov also worked at the Nasimi Institute of Linguistics of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and headed a Talysh cultural center, which was closed after his imprisonment. Mammadov was arrested on 2 February 2007 and accused of working for Iranian intelligence agencies. On 24 June 2008, he was convicted of treason and sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment. He was recognized by international human rights organizations as a political prisoner. He died in a prison hospital on 27 August 2009 after two years of imprisonment. Hilal Mammadov ( az, Hilal Məmmədov; b. 1959, Astara Rayon, Azerbaijan SSR) is an Azerbaijani journalist and human rights activist. He is the chief editor of the Baku-based newspaper "Tolyshi sado" ("The Voice of Talysh"), the only newspaper in Azerbaijan printed in the minority Talysh language. After Novruzali Mammadov died in custody, Hilal Mamedov became a second community leader for the Talysh people. He is also known as the author of the meykhana video '' Ty kto takoy? Hootan Dolati ( fa, هوتن دولتی; born 4 February 1977 in Tehran, Iran) is a political activist and member of the Iran's National Front. He was in Evin Prison for a year and a half. Zardusht Mammad Mubariz oglu Alizadeh ( az, Zərdüşt Əlizadə; born 1946 in Baku) is an independent Azerbaijani political analyst and former politician. He is known for his interviews, political comments and articles criticizing the heavy-handed rule of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party. Early life Zardusht Alizadeh was born in 1946, one of the three children of Mammad Mubariz Alizadeh, a professor of philology of the Baku State University, and his wife Zinat. He is of Talysh origin.
