Syria
Syria, officially the Syrian Arab Republic, is a country in West Asia located in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Levant. Mahmoud Hammad
Mahmoud Hammad (1923–1988) was a Syrian painter and pioneer of modern Syrian art. Life and career Hammad was born 1923 in Damascus, Syria. He studied art at the Accademia di belle arti di Roma between 1953 and 1957. He focused on the art of engraving and especially the art medals. After completing his studies he returned to Damascus in 1960 and taught as professor at the Fine Arts Faculty of Damascus since its creation. From 1970 until 1980, he became dean at the Fine Arts Faculty of Damascus. In 1939, he started exhibiting his work throughout most Arab countries, Europe and the United States. In 1948, he received first prize in Arts in Damascus Exhibition, in 1957, first prize at the competition of the city of Naples, and in 1959, first prize at the competition of Ministry of Culture in United Arab Republic. Kais Salman
Kais Salman (born 1976) is a Syrian painter, based in Damascus. His technique has been described as "monochromatic, abstract expressionism," and a departure from the work done by previous generations of Syrian painters, who had been more influenced by Soviet art. Like other contemporary Syrian artists, Salman has benefited from his country's increasing contact and popularity on the international art market, including the art auction houses of Dubai, with his paintings increasing sixfold in value from 2006 to 2010, and now selling for as much as 17,500 euros. Hurufiyya Movement
The Hurufiyya movement ( adjectival form , 'of letters' of the alphabet) is an aesthetic movement that emerged in the second half of the twentieth century amongst artists from Muslims, Muslim countries, who used their understanding of traditional Islamic calligraphy within the precepts of modern art. By combining tradition and modernity, these artists worked towards developing a culture-specific visual language, which instilled a sense of national identity in their respective nation-states when many of these states were shaking off colonial rule and asserting their independence. They adopted the same name as the Hurufism, Hurufi, an approach of Persian Sufism which emerged in the late 14th–early 15th century. Art historian Sandra Dagher has described Hurufiyya as the most important movement to emerge in Arabic art in the 20th century. Khairat Al-Saleh
Khairat Al-Saleh () born in Jerusalem and educated in Syria and Egypt, is a noted painter in the Hurufiyya movement and a ceramicist, glassmaker and printmaker. Life and career Khairat Al-Saleh was born in Jerusalem in 1940. She was educated at the University of Wales Swansea, where she studied English literature and poetry and works as a ceramist, glassmaker, printmaker and painter living between England and Syria. She is noted for her use of calligraphy and miniatures. Inspired by Arab and Islamic art, she experimented with the art of illuminated manuscripts, arabesque and geometric design in her paintings, prints and ceramics. As a poet, her work is closely linked to illumination, illustration and the art of the book. Nazir Nabaa
Nazir Nabaa () (born 1938 in Damascus, Syria) was a Syrian painter. Considered a pioneer of modern Syrian art, he studied at the College of Fine Arts in Cairo in Cairo from 1959 to 1965, during the time of the United Arab Republic. He continued his training at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris from 1971 to 1974. After completing his studies, he returned to Damascus and joined the faculty of the College of Fine Arts at Damascus University. Nabaa's style is noted for blending ancient visual culture with modern themes, and his work has been shown in exhibitions at museums such as the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts. Modern Art
Modern art includes artistic work produced during the period extending roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s, and denotes the styles and philosophies of the art produced during that era. The term is usually associated with art in which the traditions of the past have been thrown aside in a spirit of experimentation. Modern artists experimented with new ways of seeing and with fresh ideas about the nature of materials and functions of art. Fateh Moudarres
Fateh al-Moudarres (; 1922–1999) was a Syrian painter and one of the leaders of the modern art movement in Syria. Moudarres studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome, where he was influenced by Surrealism. After he completed his studies, he returned to Syria where he developed his skills under the auspices of long-time friend, mentor, and tutor Wahbi Al-Hariri. Biography Born in Aleppo, Syria, Fateh Moudarres originally taught himself realist painting techniques, before becoming interested in surrealism. He has been considered a master Syrian surrealist painter. After moving back to Syria, he was a lecturer and dean of the faculty of fine arts at Damascus University until 1993, and then became a professor. Khaled Al-Khani
Khaled al-Khani (born 17 February 1975) is a Syrian painter, currently living in Paris. Following the Syrian revolt, he has made manifest his anti-regime stance. Work Al-Khani is an artist whose works include oil painting and mural painting. His work focuses on people, whether individuals or groups, as well as women. Some have compared his artistry to the German Expressionist movement beginning before the period of the First World War, such as Otto Dix. Memories of the conflict in Syria have a profound influence on al-Khani's work. Louay Kayali
Louay Kayali (), (20 January 1934 – 26 January 1978) was a Syrian modern artist. Biography Kayali was born in Aleppo, Syria in 1934 and studied art in the Accademia di Belle Arti after having studied at the Al-Tajhiz School where his work was first exhibited in 1952. He met Syrian artist Wahbi al-Hariri there and the two would share a friendship for the rest of Kayali's life. Al-Hariri would become his mentor as he was for artist Fateh Moudarres that Hariri introduced to Kayali in 1955. Moudarress and Kayali would together represent Syrian modern art at the Venice Biennial Fair. He suffered from depression and died in 1978 from burns incurred from his bed catching fire, reportedly from a cigarette. Marwan Kassab-Bachi
Marwan Kassab-Bachi (Arabic: مروان قصاب باشي; commonly known as Marwan; 1934–2016) was a Syrian painter. Born in Damascus, he first studied at Damascus University before moving to Berlin, Germany, where he enrolled in the Hochschule der Bildende Künste. He stayed there for most of his life, and was appointed full professor in 1980. Mamdouh Kashlan
Mamdouh Kashlan (1929 – 29 August 2022) was a Syrian painter. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma in Rome, Italy from 1952 to 1959, where he obtained a diploma with a specialization in painting. He held more than 300 exhibitions in Syria and around the world and many of his paintings are on display in the National Museums of Damascus, Aleppo and Deir Atieh, as well as in the Presidential Palace. His work is also on display in the Sursock Museum in Beirut, Lebanon, Modern Art Museum in Cairo, Egypt and has been displayed in Sofia, Bulgaria, Paris, France, and Seinajoki, Finland.
