This is a list of Somali poets. Somali society is synonymous with poetry and also has a longstanding oratory tradition. Of internationally available published verse, Arabic poetry has the oldest and most diverse corpus. With Greater Somalia's proximity to the Middle East, similar attachments to poetry exist in Somali culture and traditions. Poetry has played an important role in Somali society since antiquity. Somali People
The Somalis ( so, Soomaalida 𐒈𐒝𐒑𐒛𐒐𐒘𐒆𐒖, ar, صوماليون) are an ethnic group native to the Horn of Africa who share a common ancestry, culture and history. Ladan Osman
Ladan Osman ( so, Laadan Cismaan, ar, لادان عثمان) is a Somali- American poet and teacher. Her poetry is centered on her Somali and Muslim heritage, and has been published in a number of prominent literary magazines. In 2014, she was awarded the annual Sillerman First Book Prize for her collection ''The Kitchen Dweller's Testimony''. Personal life Osman was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, and grew up in Columbus, Ohio in the United States. For her post-secondary education, Osman earned a BA from Otterbein University. She subsequently studied at the University of Texas at Austin's Michener Center for Writers, where she obtained an MFA. Additionally, Osman has received fellowships from the Fine Arts Work Center, Union League Civic & Arts Foundation, Cave Canem Foundation, and Michener Center for Writers. Yamyam (born Abdulkadir Hersi Siyad, 4 September 1946 – October 22, 2005) ( so, Cabdiqaadir Xirsi Siyaad (Yamyam), ar, "عبد قادر حرس سياد "يميم) or Yam Yam was a Somali poet and playwright. Yamyam was one of the main contributors for the Somali National Academy of Culture (SNAC), also known as the Somali National Academy of Arts, Sciences and Literature. He was active as a poet from the 1960s. There is no one consistent English translation of his name. Alternative spellings include Cabdulqaadir or Cabdilqaadir Xirsi. Early life and education Yamyam was born in the city of Dhuusa Mareeb, Galgadud Region. Yamyam's mother was Canoof Ibraahim. Warsan Shire
Warsan Shire (born 1 August 1988) is a British writer, poet, editor and teacher, who was born to Somali parents in Kenya. In 2013 she was awarded the inaugural Brunel University African Poetry Prize, chosen from a shortlist of six candidates out of a total 655 entries. Her words "No one leaves home unless/home is the mouth of a shark", from the poem "Conversations about Home (at a deportation centre)", have been called "a rallying call for refugees and their advocates". Life and career Born on 1 August 1988 in Kenya to Somali parents, Shire migrated with her family to the United Kingdom at the age of one. She has four siblings. Abd Al-Rahman bin Abdullah al Shashi ( ar, عبد الرحمن بن عبد الله الشاشي) (b. 1829 - 1904), popularly known as Sheikh Sufi, was a 19th-century Somali scholar, poet, reformist and astrologist. Shadya Yasin
Shadya Yasin ( so, Shaadiyya Yaasiin; ar, شادية ياسين) is a Somali social activist, poet and teacher. Personal life Yasin was born around 1984 in Somalia. Later living for a period in Tanzania and Kenya, she emigrated to Canada in 1998 while in her teens. For her post-secondary education, Yasin studied at York University in Toronto. She held a double major in International Development and African Studies, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in 2007. She is presently working toward a master's degree in education at the University of Toronto's Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. Career Professionally, Shadya is a certified teacher. Since 2008, she has served as the network coordinator for the York Youth Coalition, a Toronto-based NGO. In this capacity, Yasin manages 18 youth service agencies in the Weston-Mt. Dennis area. Said Salah Ahmed ( so, Saciid Saalax Axmed, ar, سعيد صالح أحمد) is a Somali playwright, poet, educator and filmmaker. Life Said Salah was previously a biology teacher in Somalia. In 1984-1985, Ahmed directed his first feature film, ''The Somali Darwish'' (alt. ''The Somalia Dervishes''), with Amar Sneh serving as producer. With a budget of $1.8 million, the 4-hour-and-40-minute epic was devoted to the polity of Darawiish king Diiriye Guure, i.e. the Dervish Movement. In the film dialogue you can hear seven languages: Somali, Arabic, Italian, English, and three regional dialects. Nuruddin Farah ( so, Nuuradiin Faarax, ar, نورالدين فارح) (born 24 November 1945) is a Somali novelist. His first novel, '' From a Crooked Rib'', was published in 1970 and has been described as "one of the cornerstones of modern East African literature today". He has also written plays both for stage and radio, as well as short stories and essays.
