John Alexander (painter)
John Alexander (1686 – ) was a Scotland, Scottish Painting, painter and engraver of the 18th century. He studied in Italy under Giuseppe Bartolomeo Chiari. Life Alexander was the son of a doctor from Aberdeen. The painter George Jamesone was his paternal great-grandfather. He spent some time in London before going to Rome in 1711. There he studied under Giuseppe Bartolomeo Chiari, Giuseppe Chiari and received commissions from the exiled Stuart court. Following his return to Scotland in 1720 he was commissioned by the Alexander Gordon, 2nd Duke of Gordon, 2nd Duke of Gordon (whom he had probably first met in Italy) to decorate a staircase at Gordon Castle with a painting depicting the Rape of Proserpine. This was based on a work by his master, Chiari, in the Palazzo Barberini.Long 1842–4 Alexander's work at the castle was later destroyed, but his sketch for the work survives in the collection of the National Gallery of Scotland. David Allan (painter)
David Allan (13 February 1744 – 6 August 1796) was a Scottish painter, limner, and illustrator, best known for historical subjects and genre works. Life He was born in Alloa in central Scotland. On leaving Foulis's Academy of painting at Glasgow (1762), after seven years' successful study, he obtained the patronage of Charles Cathcart, 9th Lord Cathcart and of Erskine of Mar, on whose estate he had been born. In 1764 Erskine made it possible for Allan to travel to Rome. He remained in Italy until 1777, studying under Gavin Hamilton and copying the old masters. In 1771 Allan sent two history paintings, ''Pompey the Great after his Defeat'' and ''Cleopatra Weeping Over the Ashes of Mark Antony'' (both now lost) to the exhibition of the Royal Academy of Arts in London. In 1773, still in Rome, his ''Hector’s Farewell from Andromache'' won the Accademia di San Luca's gold medal. David Hay (artist)
David Ramsay Hay (March 1798, Edinburgh – 10 September 1866) was a Scottish artist, interior decorator and colour theorist. Life David Ramsay Hay was the son of Rebekah or Rebecca Carmichael, a published poet and friend of Robert Burns. They lived at the foot of Monteith's Close off the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. After her husband died prematurely and penniless, David was educated at the expense of her brother, David Ramsay, a banker and owner of the ''Edinburgh Evening Courant'', then apprenticed as a reading-boy in Ramsay's printing office in Edinburgh. Instead though (around 1813), Hay moved to join Gavin Beugo (son of John Beugo) a decorative artist, based on West Register Street in Edinburgh's New Town. Neoclassicism
Neoclassicism, also spelled Neo-classicism, emerged as a Western cultural movement in the decorative arts, decorative and visual arts, literature, theatre, music, and architecture that drew inspiration from the art and culture of classical antiquity. Neoclassicism was born in Rome, largely due to the writings of Johann Joachim Winckelmann during the rediscovery of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Its popularity expanded throughout Europe as a generation of European art students finished their Grand Tour and returned from Italy to their home countries with newly rediscovered Greco-Roman ideals. The main Neoclassical movement coincided with the 18th-century Age of Enlightenment, and continued into the early 19th century, eventually competing with Romanticism. Gavin Hamilton (artist)
Gavin Hamilton (1723, Lanarkshire – 4 January 1798, Rome) was a Scottish people, Scottish Neoclassicism, neoclassical history painter, who is more widely remembered for his searches for antiquities in the neighbourhood of Rome. These roles in combination made him an arbiter of neoclassical taste. Biography Born in Lanarkshire, Scotland in 1723, he matriculated at the University of Glasgow under the Professor of Humanity at the age of 15.Skinner, Basil C. John Watson Gordon
Sir John Watson Gordon (1788 – 1 June 1864) was a Scottish Portrait painting, portrait painter and president of the Royal Scottish Academy. Life and work Gordon was born in 1788, in Edinburgh, the eldest son of Captain Watson, R.A., a cadet of the family of Watson of Overmains, in the county of Berwick. He was educated specifically to prepare him for enrolling in the Royal Engineers. He entered as a student in the government school of design, under the management of the Board of Manufactures. he showed a natural aptitude for art, and his father was persuaded to allow him to adopt it as his profession. Captain Watson was himself a skilful draughtsman, and his brother George Watson (painter), George Watson, afterwards president of the Royal Scottish Academy, was a highly respected portrait painter, second only to Henry Raeburn, Sir Henry Raeburn, who was a friend of the family. Andrew Geddes (artist)
Andrew Geddes (5 April 17835 May 1844) was a Scottish portrait painter and etcher. Life Geddes was born at 7 St Patrick Street in south Edinburgh. After receiving a Classical education movement, classical education at the Royal High School, Edinburgh, Royal High School and subsequently at the University of Edinburgh, he was employed as a clerk for five years in the excise office, in which his father held the post of deputy auditor. After the death of his father, who had opposed his desire to become an artist, he went to London and entered the Royal Academy schools. His first contribution to the exhibitions of the Royal Academy, a ''St John in the Wilderness'', appeared at Somerset House in 1806, and from that year onwards Geddes was a fairly constant exhibitor of figure-subjects and portraits. Robert Freebairn
Robert Freebairn (1765 – 23 January 1808 in London) was a British landscape painter. Life Freebairn was born in 1765, apparently of Scottish descent, and is usually stated to have been the last pupil of Richard Wilson, R.A. This does not seem certain, as Freebairn was articled to Philip Reinagle, R.A., and it was from Reinagle's house that he sent his first picture to the Royal Academy in 1782, the year of Wilson's death. He continued to exhibit landscapes up to 1786, when he appears to have gone to Italy. In 1789 and 1790 he was at Rome, and sent views of Roman scenery to the academy. In 1791 he sent two views of the "Viamala" in the Grisons, probably taken on his return journey. Robert Edmonstone
Robert Edmonstone RSA (1794–1834), was a Scottish artist. Life Edmonstone, was born at Kelso in 1794, the son of James and Catherine Edmonstone.Details from parents grave He was initially apprenticed to a watchmaker. He showed a taste for painting at an early age, and when his family came to Edinburgh, his drawings attracted much attention: he was patronised by Sir Abraham Hume, and settled in London about 1819. He first exhibited some portraits at the Royal Academy in 1818. After attending George Henry Harlow's studio he was admitted to the Royal Academy school, and subsequently travelled in Italy. Alexander Carse
Alexander Carse (c. 1770 – February 1843) was a Scottish painter known for his scenes of Scottish life. His works include a large canvas of Visit of King George IV to Scotland, George IV's visit to Leith and three early paintings of football matches. Life Carse was born in Innerwick in East Lothian to William and Catherine Carse, and was baptised early in 1770. Carse started at the Trustees Drawing Academy of Edinburgh in 1801; here he studied Dutch School (painting), Dutch painting, which influenced his later representations of interiors. Thomas Campbell (sculptor)
Thomas Campbell (1 May 1790 – 4 February 1858) was a Scottish sculptor in the early 19th century. He has several important public works, most notably a statue of Sarah Siddons in Westminster Abbey. He also has several works in the National Gallery in London. He was heavily patronised by the British aristocracy, as evidenced by his works. Life He was born in Tolbooth parish, Edinburgh Old Town, now part of the Royal Mile. He was the son of Douglas Campbell, "gentleman servant", and Helen Thorburn. John Brown (artist)
John Brown (1752 – September 5, 1787) was a Scottish artist. Biography John Brown was born around 1752, in Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of a watchmaker.
