This is a list of persons that are or were supporters or members of the Portuguese Communist Party. General secretaries *José Carlos Rates (1923–?) — Carlos Rates was elected after the 1st congress, held in Lisbon in 1923. He was chosen to General Secretary by the delegate of the Communist International in Portugal, Jules Humbert-Droz, after several problems inside the newly founded Party. Later, Bento António Gonçalves would become the Party's General Secretary and criticize Rates' work as the leader of PCP. *Bento António Gonçalves (1929–1942) — Elected in 1929, Bento Gonçalves was born in Montalegre, near Bragança, in the North of Portugal. Carlos Paredes
Carlos Paredes ComSE (; 16 February 1925 – 23 July 2004) was a virtuoso Portuguese guitar player and composer. He is regarded as one of the greatest players of Portuguese guitar of all-time. Born in Coimbra, Portugal, in a family with a long tradition of guitar playing, he was taught to play the Portuguese guitar by his father, Artur Paredes. He composed numerous soundtracks for cinema and theatre, such as the soundtrack for the Portuguese film ''Os'' ''Verdes Anos'' (1963), which contains his famous piece "Canção Verde Anos". He released several recordings as a solo artist and performed in numerous countries worldwide. Besides his music career, Paredes also worked in the public service for most of his life. Soeiro Pereira Gomes
Joaquim Soeiro Pereira Gomes (14 April 1909 – 5 December 1949) was a Portuguese writer of realist influence and became one of the major names of Portuguese literature of the 20th century. Pereira Gomes is, along with Alves Redol, the biggest name of the Portuguese neo-realist movement. He was also a communist militant and that was always present in his work. The Portuguese Communist Party headquarters (Soeiro Pereira Gomes Building), in Lisbon, is named after him. Life Soeiro was born in Gestaçô, Baião, Porto District, the son of two farmers. José de Sousa Saramago, GColSE ComSE GColCa (; 16 November 1922 – 18 June 2010), was a Portuguese writer and recipient of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Literature for his "parables sustained by imagination, compassion and irony ith which hecontinually enables us once again to apprehend an elusory reality." José Gomes Ferreira
José Gomes Ferreira, GOSE, GOL (9 July 1900 – 1985) was a Portuguese poet and fiction writer with a vast work of varied influences. Gomes Ferreira was also a political activist that participated in the resistance against the dictatorship of Oliveira Salazar, becoming later a member of the Portuguese Communist Party. In the late 1970s he occupied the presidency of the Portuguese Writers Association. A native of Porto, Ferreira graduated in law in 1924 and became a consul in Norway in the late 1920s. Soon after, became a journalist and published his works on several progressive magazines. After the rising of the right-wing dictatorship led by Salazar, Ferreira acquainted himself with the democratic resistance movements. José Carlos Ary dos Santos, GCIH or just Ary dos Santos (Lisboa, December 7, 1936 – Lisboa, January 18, 1984) was one of the most relevant names of the Portuguese popular poetry of the 20th century. Born of a bourgeois family, Ary dos Santos soon developed several skills for poetry. At only 14, the family published some poems, against his will - (he thought the poems were not good enough). In 1954, at the age of 16, Ary saw some of his poems being selected for the Anthology of the Almeida Garrett prize. After that, Ary fell out with his father and left his family home, working on several jobs, like errand boy, bubblegum and machines seller, tutor, docker, clerk and finally publicist. António Alves Redol (29December 191129November 1969) was an influential Portuguese neorealist writer. Life Redol was born in 1911 in Vila Franca de Xira to Antonio Redol da Cruz, a shopkeeper, and Inocência Alves Redol. When he was fifteen, his articles were published in the local weekly newspaper, . After finishing secondary school in 1927, he traveled to Portuguese Angola where he stayed for three years. His stay in Angola influenced Redol's worldview and later literature. In 1936, he married Maria dos Santos Mota. Early work, 1930–1940 Redol published stories in the newspapers and in which he identified with the opposition to the Estado Novo. Manuel Freire (Manuel Augusto Coentro de Pinho Freire) is a Portugal, Portuguese influential left-wing singer and composer, although he also works as a computer technician. Freire was born in Vagos Municipality, Vagos, Aveiro District on 25 April 1942. Freire's first work was an Extended play, EP, released in 1968, with the title "Livre" ("Free"), that included 4 songs.
