Paraguay, officially the Republic of Paraguay, is a landlocked country in South America. It is bordered by Argentina to the Argentina–Paraguay border, south and southwest, Brazil to the Brazil–Paraguay border, east and northeast, and Bolivia to the northwest. Raúl Casal Ribeiro Velazco (14 August 1887 – 1956) was a Paraguayan politician; he was vice president of Paraguay between 1932 and 1936, during Eusebio Ayala's government. His term was heavily marked by the Chaco War with Bolivia, which lasted between 1932 and 1935. Biography His father, Joaquín Casal-Ribeiro, was a Brazilian naval officer who participated in the Paraguayan War and later immigrated to Paraguay, and his mother, Elodia Velazco, was Uruguayan. He studied in the Colegio Nacional de la Capital in Asunción, Paraguay's capital and his birthplace. He had an active life in the student movement as he studied law in the Universidad Nacional de Asunción, wrote for various newspapers and joined the Liberal Party in his youth. Rogelio Wilfrido Delgado Casco (born 12 October 1959) is a retired football central defender from Paraguay. Club career At the club level, Delgado played for Olimpia Asunción, where he won the Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup in 1979, and six Paraguayan league titles. He also played for Independiente of Argentina, where he won the 1988–1989 league championship, and for Universidad de Chile, where he won the 1994 Chilean league championship. Paraguayan Legion
The Paraguayan Legion (), was a military unit led by colonels Juan Francisco Decoud and Fernando Iturburu that was formed in Argentina during the Paraguayan War, consisting mainly of Paraguayan exiles and opponents of the Francisco Solano López regime. Due to mistrust between the allied Argentina and Brazil, the Legion never developed into a strong fighting unit, as Brazilians distrusted this unit created by Argentina, though its organization had already been foreseen in the Treaty of the Triple Alliance signed between them in 1865. The legion started fighting, under a Paraguayan flag, only late in the war, either in March 1869 or by the battle of Pikysyry in December 1868; the war had started in 1864. Juan Francisco Decoud
Juan Francisco Decoud Berzategui (13 May 1813 – 12 April 1897) was a Paraguayan politician and military officer. He had an important role as a merchant in the Plata basin during the 19th century. Notably, he was also a senior officer in the Paraguayan Legion during the early phases of the Triple Alliance War. Biography Early life Decoud was born in 1813 in Asunción to Juan Francisco Decoud de los Santos, a merchant of Italian and Portuguese descent, and María Faustina Berazategui; both had been members of the colonial elite, and retained economic power after independence in 1811. José Segundo Decoud Domecq (14 May 1848 – 3 March 1909) was a Paraguayan politician, journalist, diplomat and military officer. He is often considered one of the foremost intellectuals of his generation, and was also one of the first liberals of the country. Decoud was one of the founders of the long-standing Colorado Party (Paraguay), Colorado Party, having been its first vice-president and written its founding instrument. During the Paraguayan War, Decoud was a member of the Paraguayan Legion fighting against the Paraguayan government. Raúl Alberto Cubas Grau (born 23 August 1943) is a Paraguayan politician and electrical engineer who served as the 45th President of Paraguay from 1998 until his resignation in 1999. A ''colorado'' and loyal follower of Lino Oviedo, who could not run for president due to his imprisonment, Cubas was elected in 1998 alongside his running mate, Luis María Argaña, a ''colorado'' ''caudillo'' who had become Oviedo's biggest political rival. In March of 1999, large protests against Cubas' government erupted following the assassination of Vice President Argaña. Julio Correa
Julio Correa Myzkowsky (August 30, 1890 – July 14, 1953) was a Paraguayan poet in Guarani language. He started to publish his poems in 1926. Encouraged by the poet Manuel Ortiz Guerrero, he began writing a column entitled "Dialoguitos Callejeros" (Small Street Dialogues) in the newspaper ''Guarani'', of Facundo Recalde. His talent became apparent during the Chaco War (1932–1935). His work in the Guarani language was well received by the public and he became known as an author, actor and director. From 1934 to 1936, he published his poems in the magazine ''Guarania'', of Natalicio González. Those became part, later on, of the book ''Body and Soul'' (1943). In 1947, he was arrested because of his writings. The civil war that year had a negative effect on the author, and he became depressed. Juan Crisóstomo Centurión y Martinez (27 January 1840 – 12 March 1902) was a Paraguayan Army officer and politician.
