This is a list of Pakistani Australians. It includes Australian citizens and permanent residents of Pakistanis, Pakistani ancestry, Pakistani-origin first generation immigrants who were naturalised with Australian nationality law, Australian citizenship, as well as expatriates who are known to have resided in Australia. Pakistani Australians are Australians who are of Pakistani descent or heritage. Most Pakistani Australians are Muslims by religion, although there are also sizeable Christian, Hindu and other minorities. History in Australia An anthropological study by the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology found a genetic pattern ( SNP) among Aboriginal Australians which is also present among some Dravidian speakers native to the Indian subcontinent. According to the study, the migration of these genes from the subcontinent to Australia may have occurred well over 4,200 years ago at around 2217 BC, roughly the same period when the Indus Valley civilisation (IVC) was emerging. Azhar Abidi
Azhar Ali Abidi (born 6 February 1968 in Wah, Pakistan) is a Pakistani Australian author and translator. He went to school in Pakistan and later studied electrical engineering at the Imperial College London and Master of Business Administration at the University of Melbourne. He migrated to Australia in 1994 and lives in Melbourne, Australia. Career Abidi has written translations, travelogues, and a number of short stories, including the Borgesian ''The Secret History of the Flying Carpet'', which is a fictitious story in a seemingly scholarly essay. His first novel, ''Passarola Rising'' (2006), was published by Viking Penguin in Australia, USA, Canada and India and translated into Spanish and Portuguese. Shahbaz Khan (hydrologist)
Shahbaz Khan (born in Jhelum, Pakistan) is an Australian climatologist and hydrologist, who has worked extensively for UNESCO and also advised governments and universities on issues related to the climate and water management. Career Khan has advised the Australian government on water management programs, such as the Prime Minister's 2007 rural water security plan. He coordinated multidisciplinary research programs under the Australian Cooperative Research Centre initiative. The ''Racial and Religious Tolerance Act 2001'' is an Act of the Parliament of Victoria, Australia, that makes behaviour that incites or encourages hatred, serious contempt, revulsion or severe ridicule against another person or group of people, because of their race or religion, unlawful in Victoria. The Act was passed during the premiership of Steve Bracks and went into effect on 1 January 2002. The Act also prohibits racist graffiti, racist posters, racist stickers, racist comments made in a publication, including the Internet and email, statements at a meeting or at a public rally. Arnold Heredia
Arnold Heredia was born in Karachi, Pakistan in 1940. He attended the Christ the King Seminary (Pakistan) and was ordained a priest of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Karachi in 1965. Among his pastoral work he served tribal people in the interior of Sindh province. Biography In 1969 Father Heredia founded the Pakistan Christian Industrial Service in collaboration with Lee Lybarger and others. Inspired by the collaboration within the Christian Conference of Asia (CCA), he helped establish Idara-e-Amn-o-Insaf (justice and peace commission) in 1972. While at St. Francis Parish, Karachi, he launched a program on adult education and social development. The New South Wales Legislative Council, often referred to as the upper house, is one of the two chambers of the parliament of the Australian state of New South Wales. The other is the Legislative Assembly. Both sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. It is normal for legislation to be first deliberated on and passed by the Legislative Assembly before being considered by the Legislative Council, which acts in the main as a house of review. The Greens New South Wales, commonly known as Greens NSW, is a green political party in New South Wales and a member of the Australian Greens. First formed in 1991, the Greens NSW began as a state-level party before joining with other green parties in Australia to create the current federated structure. The Senate is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of Australia, the lower house being the House of Representatives. Mehreen Saeed Faruqi (born 8 July 1963) is an Australian politician and former engineer who has been a Senator for New South Wales since 15 August 2018, representing the Greens. She was chosen to fill a casual vacancy caused by the resignation of Lee Rhiannon, before being elected in her own right in 2019.
