The list of Ontario by-elections includes every by-election held in the Canadian province of Ontario. By-elections occur whenever there is a vacancy in the Legislative Assembly, although an imminent general election may allow the vacancy to remain until the dissolution of parliament. Causes A by-election occurs whenever there is a vacancy in the Ontario legislature. Vacancies can occur for the following reasons: * Death of a member. * Resignation of a member. * Voided results * Expulsion from the legislature. * Ineligibility to sit. When there is a vacancy, a by-election must be called within six months. Under amendments to the Election Act approved in 2016, a by-election is no longer required when a vacancy occurs in the 12 months leading up to a fixed general election date. A by-election, also known as a special election in the United States and the Philippines, or a bypoll in India, is an election used to fill an office that has become vacant between general elections. A vacancy may arise as a result of an incumbent’s death or resignation, or when the incumbent becomes ineligible to continue in office (because of a recall, a prohibited dual mandate, criminal conviction, or failure to maintain a minimum attendance), or when an election is invalidated by voting irregularities. In some cases a vacancy may be filled by a method other than a by-election (such as the outgoing member's party nominating a replacement) or the office may be left vacant. Scarborough—Guildwood is a provincial electoral district in the Scarborough section of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, that has been represented in Legislative Assembly of Ontario since the 2007 provincial election. Laura Mae Monique Lindo (born 1976) is a Canadian politician who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in the 2018 provincial election. She represented the electoral district of Kitchener Centre as a member of the Ontario New Democratic Party. In January 2023, Lindo announced that she would step down as MPP in July to take a position with the philosophy department of the University of Waterloo. She officially resigned on July 13, 2023. A by-election was held in the provincial riding of Kitchener Centre in Ontario on November 30, 2023, to elect a new member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario following the resignation of NDP MPP Laura Mae Lindo. Kitchener City Councillor Aislinn Clancy gained the seat for the Ontario Greens. Clancy is the second member of the Ontario Greens to be elected in the province, following party leader Mike Schreiner. In addition, the by-election featured 18 candidates, the largest-ever number of candidates in an Ontario riding election. Clancy defeated fellow city councillor Debbie Chapman who was the NDP candidate.
