The Odia film industry, colloquially known as Ollywood, is the Odia language Indian film industry, based in Bhubaneshwar and Cuttack in Odisha, India. The name Ollywood is a portmanteau of the words Odia and Hollywood. Industry In 1974, the Government of Odisha declared film making and construction of cinema theatres as an industry in the state, and in 1976 it established the Odisha Film Development Corporation in Cuttack. History Odisha has a history of filmmaking, starting from 1936. The first Odia film is '' Sita Bibaha'', made by Mohan Sundar Deb Goswami in 1936. Drawn from the Indian epic ''Ramayana'', the story is about the marriage of Sita and Ram. The film plot was made from a drama written by Kamapala Mishra. Prepared with a budget of only Rs 30,000, the film has 14 song sequences. Anubha Gupta
Anubha Gupta (1930 - 14 January 1972) was an Indian Bengali actress, known for her work in Bengali cinema. She received the Best Actress in Supporting Role Award at the 26th Annual BFJA Awards for the film '' Hansuli Banker Upakatha.'' Early life Anubha Gupta was born in 1930 in Dinajpur, British India. She had an interest in dance and music since her childhood. She studied in Parry Charan Girls School and Shantiniketan. Career Gupta joined Bengali cinema as a playback singer when music director Robin Chatterjee introduced her to films. Her debut film as an actress was ''Samarpan'' which was released in 1949. She acted in theater in parallel with the silver screen. Her performance in Kabi, Ratna Dip, Champadangar Bou, Hansuli Banker Upokatha made her an established film actress and she rapidly worked her way to the top among Bengali actresses within five years. Jharana Das (, 1945 – 2 December 2022) was an Indian Ollywood actress and journalist. She was known for her contributions to the Odia film industry. Life and career Jharana Das started her career in the 1960s as a child artist and announcer for All India Radio, Cuttack where she produced creative content across drama, song and film. She later also worked as an assistant station director of Doordarshan in Cuttack. ''Times Now'' stated that Das "chose a career in the movies at a time when not many chose to walk the path" and reported that she had to deal with family opposition to follow her calling. Her brother, who was in the Indian Air Force, convinced their family to allow Jharana to pursue her choice. She had taken voice culture training in Kolkata which may have added a dimension to her performance in films. Bhubaneswar (; ) is the capital and largest city of the Indian state of Odisha.
