Anton Seuffert
Anton Seuffert (1815 – 6 August 1887) was born in Bohemia. He was a cabinetmaker with a particular expertise in the art of marquetry. Anton Seuffert, also known as Anton Seufert, learned his craft from his father, Anton Seufert senior, who was also a cabinetmaker. Seuffert worked in Vienna for the Austrian furniture manufacturing company Leistler, rising to the position of foreman. He was sent by his firm to England in order to assemble furniture for the royal places and also to set up the firm's large display of luxury wooden furniture for the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London. He stayed in England for several years and married Anna Piltz in 1855 or 1856. He emigrated to New Zealand from London on the ship Caduceus with his wife and two children, Josefieni, and William, and arrived in Auckland on 19 May 1859 (surname was spelt Senfick/Senfert). Karen Elizabeth Walker (born December 1969) is a noted New Zealand fashion designer. Private life Walker was born in December 1969. She grew up in the Auckland suburb of Remuera and attended Epsom Girls' Grammar School. Aged 21, she married Mikhail Gherman. Career Walker began her fashion label in 1987, and opened her first store in Newmarket, Auckland, in 1995. She began selling to Barneys New York in 1998, the same year she showed her first runway collection. In late 2011, she signed a partnership with United States-based retail chain Anthropologie. David Trubridge
David Geoffrey Trubridge is a furniture designer based in Whakatu, New Zealand. Background Trubridge graduated from Newcastle University in England in 1972 with a degree in Naval Architecture (Boat Design). Working as a forester in rural Northumberland for the next ten years, he taught himself to make furniture. His carefully crafted designs were shown all over the UK, including at the Victoria and Albert Museum and St. Mary's Cathedral in Edinburgh. May Anne Smith (18 June 1906 – 24 July 1988) was a painter, engraver, textile designer and textile printer. Smith was part of a movement of women who were instrumental in bringing new artistic ideas to New Zealand and influencing the art of the country. Early life May Smith was born in Simla, India, in 1906 where British India had its summer government headquarters. Smith's father was Sir Joseph Smith, a civil engineer. Ernest Shufflebotham
Ernest Shufflebotham (17 September 1908 – 6 May 1984) was an English-born potter and designer active from the 1930s - 1950s. History He was trained by Keith Murray, a New Zealand-born ceramic designer, while at Wedgwood in England. He developed into a skilled thrower and was a key interpreter of Murray's designs. In 1948 Shufflebotham was brought to New Zealand by Crown Lynn along with a number of other designers including Frank Carpay to work in the company's 'Specials Department'. He was employed to produce more upmarket works that would expand the market for Crown Lynn ceramics. He was one of the few professional throwers in New Zealand during the period from his arrival in 1948 to his departure in 1957. Keith Day Pearce Murray (5 July 1892 – 16 May 1981) was a New-Zealand-born British architect and industrial designer, known for ceramic, silver and glass designs for Wedgwood, Mappin & Webb and Stevens & Williams in the 1930s and 1940s. He is considered to be one of the most influential designers of the Art Deco / Modern age. Early life and education Murray was born in the Auckland suburb of Mount Eden on 5 July 1892. His father, Charles Henry Murray, from Peterhead, Scotland, and his mother, Lilian Day George, from New Plymouth, New Zealand, had married in New Plymouth in March 1889. Frank Carpay
Franciscus Hubertus Johannes Carpay (13 July 1917 – 12 September 1985) was a Dutch-born New Zealand industrial designer. Early life Carpay was born in Heusden, Netherlands, and trained at the Hertogenbosch Technical School in Hertogenbosch. He left the company in 1950 and travelled to the south of France where he met Pablo Picasso and worked at the Madoura Pottery in Valauris in 1950. At Picasso's insistence, Carpay met with two other pottery decorators, Roger Capron and Roger Picault, also working in Vallauris. Entrepreneurship Carpay established his own small commercial pottery in Tegelen. The business was not successful, and he returned to work as a graphic designer. Flora MacKenzie
Flora MacKenzie (1902–1982) was a New Zealand dress designer and brothel owner, based in Auckland for most of her life. Early life Born in 1902, Mackenzie was the daughter of Sir Hugh Ross MacKenzie, a farmer and horse stud owner in Mangere, Auckland. After finishing secondary school, she began to train as a nurse, but did not accept discipline from the matrons who supervised trainee nursing activities. However, she discovered that she did have a flair for dressmaking, and opened Ninette Gowns in Vulcan Lane, Auckland. Her shop became highly successful, attracting a prosperous clientele from Auckland's more affluent suburbs. Humphrey Ikin
Humphrey John Ikin (born 7 May 1957) is a New Zealand furniture designer. Early life and family Born in Lower Hutt on 7 May 1957, Ikin was educated at King's College in Auckland, before going on to study at Massey University from 1975 to 1977, and the University of Auckland in 1981. In 1979, Ikin married Philippa Anne Malden. Furniture design Ikin's furniture is known for its design quality and Pacific minimalist look. In 1998, New York's ''I.D.
