List Of New South Wales Legislative Council Appointments
This is a list of appointments to the New South Wales Legislative Council, caused by the resignation or death of an incumbent member. A departure creates a casual vacancy which is filled by a candidate of the same affiliation in a joint sitting of the Parliament of New South Wales. The Constitution of New South Wales states that if the previous sitting Legislative Council member was at the time of his/her election the representative of a particular political party, the nominated candidate for the vacancy must be a member of that same party. The current system has existed since amendments in 1991. From 1934 until the 1978 electoral reforms, which introduced direct election of members of the Legislative Council, casual vacancies were filled by a vote of a joint sitting, not necessarily with a member of the same party. New South Wales Legislative Council
The New South Wales Legislative Council, often referred to as the upper house, is one of the two chambers of the Parliament of New South Wales, parliament of the Australian state of New South Wales. Along with the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly, it sits at Parliament House, Sydney, Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. It is normal for legislation to be first deliberated on and passed by the Legislative Assembly before being considered by the Legislative Council, which acts in the main as a house of review. The Legislative Council has 42 members, elected by proportional representation in which the whole state is a single electorate. Greens New South Wales
The Greens NSW, also known as the NSW Greens, is a green political party in New South Wales and a member of the Australian Greens. First formed in 1991, the Greens NSW began as a state-level party before joining with other green parties in Australia to create the current federated structure. The Greens NSW continue to be separate to the other state and territory Greens parties in several regards. The Greens NSW tend to be more left-wing in their political positions in comparison to the other state parties, and continues to maintain the original Greens policy of not having a single parliamentary leader, instead being based on principles of collective leadership. Mehreen Faruqi
Mehreen Saeed Faruqi (born 8 July 1963) is a Pakistani-born Australian politician and former engineer who has been a federal Senator for New South Wales since 15 August 2018, representing the Greens. She was chosen to fill a casual vacancy caused by the resignation of Lee Rhiannon, before being elected in her own right in 2019. She had previously served in the New South Wales Legislative Council between June 2013 and August 2018. Since June 2022, Faruqi has served as Deputy Leader of the Australian Greens. Early life Faruqi was born on 8 July 1963 in Lahore, Pakistan. Her father, a civil engineer, was a professor at the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) in Lahore and she grew up on the UET campus. Ben Franklin (Australian Politician)
Benjamin Cameron Franklin (born 1972/1973) is an Australian politician. He served as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from March 2015 until March 2019, representing the National Party. He resigned in 2019 to contest the Legislative Assembly seat of Ballina, but was defeated by the incumbent Greens MP Tamara Smith. In May 2019, he was appointed to fill the casual vacancy caused by his own resignation. Franklin served as the Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, the Minister for the Arts, and the Minister for Regional Youth in the second Perrottet ministry from December 2021 to March 2023. Rose Butler Jackson is an Australian Labor Party politician serving as a Member of the New South Wales Legislative Council since 8 May 2019. Since 5 April 2023, she has been serving in the Minns ministry as Minister for Water, Minister for Housing, Minister for Homelessness, Minister for Mental Health, Minister for Youth, and Minister for the North Coast. She is the former Assistant General Secretary of NSW Labor. Jackson is a former Secretary of the New South Wales Labor Left faction and associated with the majority hard-left subfaction within Labor Left. The New South Wales Labor Party, officially known as the Australian Labor Party (New South Wales Branch) and commonly referred to simply as NSW Labor, is the New South Wales branch of the Australian Labor Party (ALP). Lynda Voltz
Lynda Jane Voltz (born 1965) is an Australian politician. She is a Labor Party member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, representing Auburn since 2019. Career Voltz joined the Australian Army Reserve in 1984, and in 1987 she became one of the first women to the join the regular Australian Army as one of the second group of women to train alongside men at Army Recruit Training Centre at Kapooka. She joined the Royal Australian Corps of Military Police, as it was one of the few field force units women were allowed to join. Peter Poulos (politician)
Peter John Poulos is an Australian politician. He was a Liberal member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from May 2021, when he was appointed to replace John Ajaka, until the 2023 election. Poulos was born to Greek-born parents and grew up in Bardwell Park. He was educated at Bexley North Public School and Sydney Technical High School before attending the University of New South Wales, where he studied for a Bachelor of Commerce. John Ajaka
John George Ajaka (born 13 January 1956), is a former Australian politician who served as a New South Wales Minister in the O'Farrell and Baird governments. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 2007 to 2021, representing the Liberal Party. He was the first Liberal Party Lebanese Australian member of an Australian parliament. Ajaka served as the Minister for Ageing and Minister for Disability Services from August 2013 to January 2017. He was also appointed as Minister for the Illawarra from 2013 to 2015 in the O'Farrell and first Baird ministries. Scott Barrett (politician)
Scott James Barrett is an Australian politician. He was appointed to the New South Wales Legislative Council on 24 February 2022 to fill the casual vacancy caused by the resignation of Trevor Khan. He is a member of the National Party. Early life and career Barrett was born and raised in the Central West region, and attended Sydney Church of England Grammar School. He then attended Hawkesbury Agricultural College where he completed a Bachelor Systems Agriculture and served as President of the Hawkesbury Student Union. Barrett then worked as a presenter and reporter with ABC Radio in north-west Queensland and then served as a media adviser for federal Katter's Australia Party MP Bob Katter between 2008 and 2010. Trevor Khan
Trevor John Khan (born 12 October 1957) is an Australian magistrate and former politician who served as a National Party of Australia – NSW, Nationals member of the New South Wales Legislative Council between 24 March 2007 and 6 January 2022, including for a time as Deputy President and Chair of Committees. Background and early career Khan attended Illawarra Grammar School in Wollongong, New South Wales, Wollongong from 1962 to 1975. While attending school, his teachers were able to identify that he had dyslexia.
