New Romanticism
The New Romantic movement was an underground subculture movement that originated in the United Kingdom in the late 1970s. The movement emerged from the nightclub scene in London and Birmingham at venues such as Billy's and The Blitz. The New Romantic movement was characterised by flamboyant, eccentric fashion inspired by fashion boutiques such as Kahn and Bell in Birmingham and PX in London. Early adherents of the movement were often referred to by the press by such names as Blitz Kids, New Dandies and Romantic Rebels. Influenced by David Bowie, Marc Bolan and Roxy Music, the New Romantics developed fashions inspired by the glam rock era coupled with the early Romantic period of the late 18th and early 19th century (from which the movement took its name). The term "New Romantic" is known to have been coined by musician, producer, manager and innovator Richard James Burgess. Princess Julia
Princess Julia (born Julia Fodor, 8 April 1960) is an English DJ and music writer who has also been called the "first lady of London's fashion scene." Biography Princess Julia first came to notice in the early 1980s as part of the short-lived Blitz Kids club scene with the likes of Boy George. She achieved mild success and clubland renown after her appearance in the video for " Fade to Grey", the UK hit single from Steve Strange's band Visage. After a stint as a fashion model in the early to mid-1980s, both in London and Tokyo, she started to build a successful career as a club DJ. She was a resident DJ at the Kinky Gerlinky club nights. In 2005, pop star Kylie Minogue and her stylist William Baker chose Princess Julia to be part of the stage video for Kylie's successful 'Showgirl—The Greatest Hits' world tour. Visage (band)
Visage were a British synthpop band, formed in London in 1978. The band became closely linked to the burgeoning New Romantic fashion movement of the early 1980s, and are best known for their hit " Fade to Grey" which was released in late 1980. In the UK, the band achieved two Top 20 albums (''Visage'' and '' The Anvil'') and five Top 30 singles before the commercial failure of their third album ('' Beat Boy'') led to their break-up in 1985. The band has seen various line-up changes over the years, all fronted by vocalist Steve Strange, who resurrected the band name in the 2000s. In 2013, the most recent line-up of the band released '' Hearts and Knives'', the first new Visage album in 29 years. The band's fifth and final album, '' Demons to Diamonds'', was released in 2015, nine months after Strange had died following a heart attack. Techno Twins
The Techno Twins (later known simply as The Technos) were a British electronic music duo formed in London. Career The band, consisting of husband-wife duo Steve Fairnie and Bev Sage, formed in 1977. In the 1990s, ''Mixmag'' magazine credited the Techno Twins with coining the phrase 'techno' and starting the techno music revolution. Separating from the band Writz, the duo decided that they would combine old songs with modern electronic sounds, and in December 1982 they were signed by PRT Records. Their debut single was a cover of " Falling in Love Again", and the song received airplay and critical acclaim from the press. It peaked at No. 70 on the UK Singles Chart, their only appearance in any UK chart. An album, ''Technostalgia'' followed, made up of songs from the 1930s and 1940s, and some self-composed songs with Dave Hewson. Steve Strange
Stephen John Harrington (28 May 1959 – 12 February 2015), known professionally as Steve Strange, was a Welsh singer. From the late 1970s he was a nightclub host and promoter. He became famous as the leader of the new wave synth-pop group Visage, best known for their single " Fade to Grey", and was one of the most influential figures behind the New Romantic movement of the early 1980s. Early life Harrington was born in Newbridge, Caerphilly, Wales. His grandfather moved with his family to Aldershot, Hampshire, where his father was serving in the British Army as a paratrooper. The family moved back to Wales and lived in Rhyl, Denbighshire, on the north coast, where his parents bought a large guest house and opened sea front cafes. His parents divorced and Harrington moved back to Newbridge in South Wales with his mother, where he attended Newbridge Grammar School. Spandau Ballet
Spandau Ballet () were an English new wave band formed in Islington, London, in 1979. Inspired by the capital's post-punk underground dance scene, they emerged at the start of the 1980s as the house band for the Blitz Kids, playing "European Dance Music" as "The Applause" for this new club culture's audience. They became one of the most successful groups of the New Romantic era of British pop and were part of the Second British Invasion of the ''Billboard'' Top 40 in the 1980s, selling 25 million albums and having 23 hit singles worldwide. The band have had eight UK top 10 albums, including three greatest hits compilations and an album of re-recorded material. Philip Sallon
Philip Sallon (born 1951) is a British club promoter, event organiser, socialite, style innovator, impresario, and clothing designer. He was born in London, England. He is particularly known for being a prominent member of the Punk sub-cultural and New Romantic pop cultural movements during the 1970s and 1980s. Early life and education Philip Sallon was born in London in 1951, the grandson of Polish Jewish immigrant tailors who moved to the UK in 1904. His father, Ralph Sallon, was a well-known caricaturist who married his mother Anna Simon in 1945. They had one son (Philip) and three daughters. He was educated at Harrow County School, later renamed Gayton school. In 1970 he enrolled on an arts foundation course at East Ham College. In 1975 he applied and was offered a place at Saint Martin's School of Art to study fashion however he was expelled after one year for not attending. The Mood
The Mood were a British pop band from 1981 to 1984, based in York, England. It consisted of members John Moore, Mark James and Eric James (the latter no relation, as their real names were Mark James Fordyce and Eric James Logan). Career They released a single on a local small independent record label, Romantic Records, entitled "Is There A Reason". In 1981 they were a five-piece band, and with Moore and the two James were Steve Carter and John Dalby. After the band reshuffle, the three remaining members of The Mood signed to RCA Records in 1981, and released a new re-produced mix of "Is There A Reason". Then came "Don't Stop", a No. 1 on the first UK Dance Chart. Neither track reached the Top 40 in the UK Singles Chart, and the follow-up "Paris is One Day Away" stalled at No. 42. Marilyn (singer)
Peter Robinson (born 3 November 1962), better known as Marilyn, is an English singer. He is known for his 1983 hit "Calling Your Name" and his androgynous appearance. Early life Robinson was born in Kingston, Jamaica. At age five, he moved with his mother to Borehamwood, England. He left school at 15, and has stated that he was bullied at school for being feminine, and that he self-harmed. The Marilyn persona As a boy, Robinson loved Marilyn Monroe's image, and Marilyn became his school nickname. While the name originated from homophobic bullies at school, Robinson decided to appropriate it to his advantage. As a teenager, he was a regular nightclub-goer and wanted to look different, so he adopted a Marilyn Monroe image wearing vintage dresses with bleached blond hair. Endgames (band)
Endgames were a Scottish pop band active during the 1980s. They released two albums on Virgin Records, but failed to achieve significant commercial success. History Origins and early years Endgames was formed in Glasgow, Scotland by David Rudden (bass, vocals) and David Murdoch (keyboards). The band began through gigging at clubs and colleges in Glasgow, Scotland, and eventually appeared as a support act for the band Simple Minds in late December 1979, for which they received a rather lukewarm mention at the "New Musical Express" ("Pleasant rather disturbing, End Game [''sic!''] have some good, if half-formed ideas... but at least they don't sound like the Berlin Blondes").
