The North American country of Mexico regularly experiences tropical cyclones from both the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans. Tropical cyclones that produce maximum sustained winds of more than 119 kilometre per hour (74 mph) are designated as hurricanes, which can produce deadly and damaging effects, particularly where they make landfall, or move ashore. Hurricane Brenda (1973)
Hurricane Brenda of August 1973 was the first tropical cyclone on record to make landfall in the Mexican state of Campeche. The tropical wave that spawned Brenda moved off the west coast of Africa on August 9, and uneventfully traversed the Atlantic. By August 18, an associated area of low pressure developed sufficient convective activity to be declared a tropical depression. Later that day, the system intensified into a tropical storm before moving inland over the Yucatan Peninsula. Brenda had moved back over water by August 21 and began to quickly intensify, with an eye forming later that day. The storm peaked as an upper-end Category 1 hurricane with winds of before making landfall in Campeche. The hurricane rapidly weakened after moving over land and dissipated the following day. 1916 Pensacola Hurricane
The 1916 Pensacola hurricane was a tropical cyclone that swept across the western Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico in October 1916. It was the last hurricane of the 1916 Atlantic hurricane season, forming as a tropical depression near Jamaica on October 9 and moved slowly southwest and west, taking an unusual track for storms in October. 1909 Monterrey Hurricane
The 1909 Monterrey hurricane was one of the deadliest Atlantic tropical cyclones on record, killing an estimated 4,000 people throughout Mexico. Originating from a tropical storm east of the Leeward Islands on August 20, the storm tracked west-northwest, entering the Caribbean as a minimal hurricane the next day. After striking Hispaniola on August 23, the hurricane made another landfall in eastern Cuba before reentering the Caribbean.
