Mauritians
Mauritians (singular Mauritian; ; Creole: ''Morisien'') are nationals or natives of the Republic of Mauritius and their descendants. Mauritius is a melting pot of multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-religious peoples. Mauritian is made up of blended groups of people who come mainly from South Asian (notably Indian), African ( Mozambique, Madagascar and Zanzibar), European (White/European Mauritians), and Chinese descent, as well as those of a mixed background from any combination of the aforementioned ethnic groups. Creol-Mauritian is the blending of the different cultures; this is why it is complex to define Creol-Mauritian. Satcam Boolell
Sir Satcam Boolell GCSK QC (11 September 1920 – 23 March 2006) was a Mauritian politician who served as member of the Legislative Assembly in Mauritius. He died on 23 March 2006, in Curepipe. He was also known as "Somduth" by his peers and family members. Early life and education Born in 1920 on the Gros Billot sugar estate (between New Grove and GrosBois in Grand Port, to Sahadewoo Boolell and Cossilah Choony, Satcam Boolell grew up with five siblings. In the mid-1800s his grandfather had migrated from the village of Singarmau located in Jaunpore, now a district of Uttar Pradesh, India. His father Sahadewoo (born in 1879 and died in 1940 in New Grove, Mauritius) worked as a policeman and supplemented his income as a trader and supervisor at the Dookhee Gungah property where he grew vegetables and traded nursery plants. Xavier-Luc Duval
Charles Gaëtan Xavier-Luc Duval (born 28 January 1958) is a Mauritian politician and was also Deputy Prime Minister of Mauritius in the cabinet of Sir Anerood Jugnauth from December 2014 to December 2016. He was also Minister of Tourism & External Communications and serves as 1st Member of Parliament elected from Constituency No 18 Belle Rose & Quatres Bornes. He is the leader of the Mauritian Social Democrat Party (PMSD). His party has 4 MPs at parliament and he succeeded Arvin Boolell as Leader of Opposition on 4 March 2021. He served as Vice Prime Minister in the cabinet of Navin Ramgoolam from 2005 to June 2014. Gaëtan Duval
Sir Charles Gaëtan Duval QC (9 October 1930 – 5 May 1996) was a Mauritian barrister, statesman, and politician, who was the leader of the Parti Mauricien Social Démocrate (PMSD) political party. Early life and education Duval was born in Rose Hill on 9 October 1930 in an upper middle-class Creole family of mixed ancestry. His father Charles was a civil servant and his mother Rosina Henrisson (1902-1989) was a housewife. In 1933, when Gaëtan was only 3 years old, his father died and his uncle Raoul raised him. The young Duval attended Saint-Enfant-Jésus RCA primary school and the Royal College of Curepipe. He then travelled abroad to study law at Lincoln's Inn (UK) and at the Faculty of Law of (Paris). Atma Doolooa
Bhawanand Doolooa, commonly known as Atma Doolooa (19522013) was a Mauritian politician and author. Early life Atma Doolooa was born in a Hindu Chamar or Ravived family in Flacq, British Mauritius. His father Bissoon Doolooa was a ''Sirdar'', that is, a supervisor of labourers, and who was the grandchild of Shree Doolooa who landed in Mauritius from Bihar, India in 1856 as a coolie or indentured labourer who later worked as a tanner at the Constance Manes sugar estate in Flacq. After leaving secondary school he worked in a tavern owned by his father before travelling to India for tertiary studies in Indore in Hotel Management. Rodrigues (island)
Rodrigues ( ; Creole: ) is a autonomous outer island of the Republic of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, about east of Mauritius. It is part of the Mascarene Islands, which include Mauritius and Réunion. Serge Clair
Louis Serge Clair (born April 1, 1940) was the Chief Commissioner of Rodrigues from February 4, 2003 until 4 August 2006, and former minister of Rodrigues. Serge Clair, in the 1960s, abandoned priesthood to pursue a career in politics. He went to Australia to further his studies. After his studies, he returned to Rodrigues to engage actively in politics. Serge Clair founded his party, the Rodrigues People's Organisation (or OPR) in 1976. Quickly enough, he grew in popularity, and in 1982, his party won a seat in the general assembly of Mauritius for the first time. He won the elections in 1983, 1987, 1991, 1995 and 2000. Dorine Chukowry
Marie Christiane Dorine Chukowry, commonly known as Dorine Chukowry, (born 1972) is a Mauritian politician. Early life and career Chukowry was born in Port Louis. She received her primary school education at Loretto Convent of Port Louis, before starting her secondary school education at London College, which she subsequently left in order to complete her secondary school education at St Batholomew College. She graduated with a Higher School Certificate in 1992 from the latter. She then worked at the same St Batholomew College as a clerk, where she was later promoted to School Principal. Angidi Verriah Chettiar CBE (29 April 1928 – 15 September 2010) was a Mauritian politician who served twice as the second vice president of Mauritius until his death in September 2010. Early life Angidi Chettiar was born in Aruppukkottai in Virudhunagar district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. He came to Mauritius at the age of 10. His family were traders. Raouf Bundhun
Abdool Raouf Bundhun (born 14 January 1937) who served as the third vice president of Mauritius from 2002 to 2007. He was elected by National Assembly of Mauritius on 25 February 2002 for a term of five years. Prior to assuming office he had been Mauritius' ambassador to France. He has also been the member of National Assembly of Mauritius for two terms; from 1967 to 1976 and 1995 to 2000.
