The Lumen Technologies operating companies are local exchange carriers owned by Lumen Technologies, the third largest landline telephone company in the United States. Lumen Technologies operating companies consist of operations inherited from various predecessor companies, which is reflected in the differing names of the companies and partially overlapping service territories; all operating companies do business using the CenturyLink brand. Local exchange carrier (LEC) is a regulatory term in telecommunications for the local telephone company. In the United States, telephone, wireline telephone companies are divided into two large categories: long-distance calling, long-distance (interexchange carrier, or IXCs) and local (local exchange carrier, or LECs). This structure is a result of Breakup of the Bell System, 1984 divestiture of then-regulated monopoly carrier American Telephone & Telegraph. Local telephone companies at the time of the divestiture are also known as Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers (ILEC). The divestiture created local exchange carriers for the management of local telephone lines and switches, and provisioning of local phone services within their business area, as well as the long-distance calls originating or terminating in their business area. A Regional Bell Operating Company (RBOC) was a corporate entity created as result of the antitrust lawsuit by the United States Department of Justice against the Western Electric Company and American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) in 1949 and a suit in 1974 against AT&T (''United States v. AT&T (1982), United States v. AT&T''). The suits were settled in the Modification of Final Judgment in August 1982. AT&T agreed to divest its local exchange service operating companies, effective January 1, 1984.
