List Of Lady And Gentleman Ushers
This page is a list of Lady and Gentleman Ushers of the Royal Household of the United Kingdom from the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660 up to the present day. Gentleman Ushers originally formed three classes: Gentleman Ushers of the Privy Chamber, Gentleman Ushers Daily Waiters and Gentleman Ushers Quarterly Waiters. The number of ordinary ushers of these classes were fixed at four, four, and eight respectively, but ushers "in extraordinary" were also sometimes appointed. After 1901 these distinctions between the Gentleman Ushers were abolished, except between the ordinary and extraordinary ushers (and two "honorary" ushers in the early 20th century). The first Lady Usher in Ordinary was appointed in 2021. There are currently 10 Lady and Gentleman Ushers with two representing the Royal Navy, four representing the Army and four representing the Royal Air Force. Edward Capel
General Thomas Edward Capel (24 March 1770 – 3 February 1855) was a British Army officer and sportsman. Thomas Edward Capel was the son of William Capel, 4th Earl of Essex, by his second wife, Harriet Bladen, and the elder brother of Rev. William Robert Capel (1775–1854). He was educated at Exeter College, Oxford, where he graduated with a BA in 1790, and was subsequently a Fellow of Merton College, Oxford. As a cricketer, Capel was mainly associated with Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). David Mitchell (Royal Navy Officer)
Vice-Admiral Sir David Mitchell ( – 1 June 1710) was a Royal Navy officer and courtier who served as the Black Rod from 1698 to 1710. He came from humble origins, being descended from, as John Charnock put it, a family "more distinguished for their integrity than their riches". When he was sixteen years old, his father apprenticed him to the master of a trading vessel from Leith. Having served this apprenticeship, he acted as mate aboard various vessels engaged in the Baltic trade. On the outbreak of the Third Anglo-Dutch War in 1672, he was pressed into service in the Royal Navy. He is recorded serving as a midshipman aboard the in the Mediterranean from 31 October 1673 to 15 October 1674, under the captaincy of Edward Russell. Fleetwood Sheppard
Fleetwood Sheppard (1 January 1634 – 25 August 1698) was an English courtier and writer who was a member of the royal courts of Charles II and William III. He was an educated man known for his lively wit and honesty, and was an important figure in the poetry of the 1680s and 1690s. Edward Carteret (courtier)
Edward Carteret (1671 – 15 April 1739) was an English politician and served as Postmaster General from 1721 until his death. Life Edward Carteret was the third son of Philip Carteret FRS of Hawnes and younger brother of George Carteret, 1st Baron Carteret. He was educated at Brentwood School and Trinity College, Cambridge. Carteret was returned as Member of Parliament for Huntingdon in 1698 and for Bedford in 1702. He was returned as MP for Bere Alston at a by-election on 9 December 1717 and resigned in 1720 when he was made Postmaster General. John Ayton
John Ayton MBE (born 1962/1963), is a British businessman and investor in the luxury goods industry, and the co-founder of Links of London and Annoushka, an English jewellery brand founded in 2009. Sir Hugh Pollard, 2nd Baronet (1603 – 27 November 1666) was an English soldier and MP elected for Bere Alston in 1640, Callington in 1660, and Devon in 1661. He supported the Royalist cause in the English Civil War. David Erskine (serjeant-at-arms)
Capt. Sir Henry David Erskine of Cardross (5 January 1838 – 7 September 1921) was a Scottish military officer and courtier who was the Serjeant-at-Arms of the House of Commons from 1885–1915. Early life and education Erskine was born in Bombay, the eldest son of James Elphinstone Erskine (1804–1844) and Mary Eliza Fagan, daughter of Lt.-Gen. Christopher Fagan. His branch of the family descended from the second Lord Cardross (his father's great-grandfather) and the Earls of Buchan. His father's mother was the daughter of the 11th Lord Elphinstone. Sir Algernon Edward West (4 April 1832 – 21 March 1921) was an English civil servant. He acted as Principal Private Secretary to Prime Minister William Gladstone. Biography He was the third son of Martin John West and Lady Maria Walpole, third daughter of Horatio Walpole, 2nd Earl of Orford; Edward West was his uncle.
