Kalamazoo College
Kalamazoo College is a private university, private Liberal arts colleges in the United States, liberal arts college in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Founded in 1833 by American Baptist Churches USA, Baptist ministers as the Michigan and Huron Institute, Kalamazoo is the oldest private college in Michigan. From 1840 to 1850, the institute operated as the Kalamazoo Branch of the University of Michigan. After receiving its charter from the state in 1855, the institute changed its name to Kalamazoo College. Kalamazoo is a member of the Consortium of Liberal Arts Colleges (CLAC) and the Great Lakes Colleges Association. The college's sports teams are nicknamed the Hornets and compete in the NCAA Division III Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Julie Mehretu (born November 28, 1970) is an Ethiopian American contemporary visual artist, known for her multi-layered paintings of abstracted landscapes on a large scale. Her paintings, drawings, and prints depict the cumulative effects of urban sociopolitical changes. Early life and education Mehretu was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 1970, the first child of an Ethiopian college professor of geography and a Jewish American Montessori teacher. Michigan House Of Representatives
The Michigan House of Representatives is the lower house of the Michigan Legislature. There are 110 members, each of whom is elected from constituencies having approximately 77,000 to 91,000 residents, based on population figures from the 2020 U.S. census. Its composition, powers and duties are established in Article IV of the Michigan Constitution. Members are elected in even-numbered years and take office at 12 p.m. (EST) on January 1 following the November general election. Concurrently with the Michigan Senate, the House first convenes on the second Wednesday in January, according to the state constitution. Darrin Quiroz Camilleri (born January 28, 1992) is an American politician from Michigan who represents the 4th district in the Michigan Senate since 2023. He previously represented the 23rd District in the Michigan House of Representatives. A member of the Democratic Party, his constituency includes several Downriver communities, including Brownstown, Gibraltar, Grosse Ile, Huron, Trenton and Woodhaven. The ''Kalamazoo Gazette'' is the daily newspaper in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and is part of MLive Media Group, Michigan's largest local media organization. The ''Gazette'' publishes seven days a week. Papers are available for home delivery on Thursday and Sunday. History Originally founded in 1833 by John D. Defrees as the ''Michigan Statesman and St. Joseph Chronicle'', the paper's name was shortened to the ''Michigan Statesman'' after it was purchased by Henry Gilbert. The paper became the ''Kalamazoo Gazette'' in 1837. In April 2010, the ''Gazette'' announced it would pay $1,525,000 to the City of Kalamazoo to avoid lawsuits seeking $4 million in previously awarded tax breaks related to the 2002 expansion of their downtown Kalamazoo printing facility. Maynard Owen Williams
Maynard Owen Williams (September 12, 1888 – June 1963) became the first National Geographic foreign correspondent in 1919. Over the course of his career, he explored Asia and witnessed the Russian Revolution. He died in Antalya, Turkey, and was buried in the Feriköy Protestant Cemetery located in Istanbul. In 1923, he witnessed the public opening of King Tut's Tomb in the Kingdom of Egypt, then a British protectorate. In 1931, he participated in the Croisière Jaune (Yellow Expedition) of Georges-Marie Haardt for the Citroën company and travelled to Afghanistan and British India. In his own words a "camera-coolie and a roughneck," Williams pioneered the field of travel photography. Pulitzer Prize For Poetry
The Pulitzer Prize for Poetry is one of the seven American Pulitzer Prizes awarded annually for Letters, Drama, and Music. The award came five years after the first Pulitzers were awarded in other categories; Joseph Pulitzer's will had not mentioned poetry. It was first presented in 1922, and is given for a distinguished volume of original verse by an American author, published during the preceding calendar year. Before the establishment of the award, the 1918 and 1919 Pulitzer cycles included three Pulitzer Prize Special Citations and Awards (called at the time the Columbia University Poetry Prize) for poetry books funded by "a special grant from The Poetry Society."
