Ivory Coast
Ivory Coast, also known as Côte d'Ivoire, officially the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire, is a country on the southern coast of West Africa. Fatou Keïta
Fatou Keïta (born 1965) is an Ivorian writer of children's books and novels. Education and career Born in Soubré in Ivory Coast, Fatou Keïta had her primary education in Bordeaux, where her father was studying surgery. She subsequently went to high school in Bouaké, where she gained her baccalaureate in 1974. In 1981, she graduated from the University of Côte d'Ivoire, and did further studies in England and the United States. In 1995 she won a Fulbright Scholarship and went to the University of Virginia at Charlottesville to research Black African women writers in the US as well as in England. Regina Yaou
Regina Yaou (sometimes N'doufou) (10 July 1955 – 4 November 2017) was a writer from Ivory Coast. Life and career Yaou was born in Dabou and raised by her aunt in a literary family, and wrote her first poems between the ages of twelve and fourteen. She attended the technical high school in Cocody, where in 1977 she participated in a literary contest organized by the publishing house Nouvelles éditions africaines; this led to the creation of her first work, a novella entitled ''La Citadine'' which has remained unpublished, but which won a prize in the contest. After leaving school she worked for a few years before returning to her studies in 1982; she attended the University of Tours and spent a year at the Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Cocody. She has also lived in Akrou, in the Jacqueville Department. Véronique Tadjo
Véronique Tadjo (born 1955) is a writer, poet, novelist, and artist from Côte d'Ivoire. Having lived and worked in many countries within the African continent and diaspora, she feels herself to be pan-African, in a way that is reflected in the subject matter, imagery and allusions of her work. Biography Early years and education Born in Paris, Véronique Tadjo is the daughter of an Ivorian civil servant and a French painter and sculptor. Brought up in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, she travelled widely with her family. Marina Niava
Marina Niava (born 1985) is an Ivorian film director, film producer, and writer. Biography Niava is the youngest daughter of Pierre and Cécile Niava, both language teachers. She developed an early interest in the arts and literature and won several literary prizes. She graduated from Lycée Sainte Marie d'Abidjan and received the Series A Excellence Award. After receiving her diploma in Journalism and Audiovisual Production from the Institut des Sciences et Techniques de la Communication, Niava won a competition run by Radio JAM in Abidjan and began her career as a trainee host. She later worked as a journalist for Africa 24. Niava developed her interest in cinema while filming a commercial. Michelle Lora
Michelle Tanon-Lora (born 1968) is an Ivorian writer and academic, teaching literary criticism and Spanish literature at the Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Abidjan. Passionately interested in story telling, she has created a group of oral story tellers called "Pathé Pathé" (meaning patchwork). In 2009, she began writing children's stories herself, believing that reading encourages young people to show interest in Africa's cultural heritage. Aké Loba
Gérard Aké Loba (15 August 1927 in Abobo, in the Abobo Baoule neighborhood – 3 August 2012 in Aix-en-Provence, France) was an Ivorian diplomat and writer. Werewere Liking (born 1950, in Cameroon) is a writer, playwright and performer based in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. She established the Ki-Yi Mbock theatre troupe in 1980 and founded the Ki-Yi village in 1985 for the artistic education of young people. Her novel ''Elle sera de jaspe et de corail'' is a song-novel recounted by an astute ''misovire'' (literally 'man-hater' from misos Gr. "hate" and vir Lat. "man") in writing a journal on nine themes as a dialectic between two men wherein the author of the journal imagines a new race of people uninhibited by the historical baggage of patriarchy and colonialism. Simone Kaya
Simone Kaya (February 11, 1937 – June 7, 2007) was an Ivorian writer and nurse. She is considered a pioneer among women writers in Ivory Coast, the first woman to enter the country's literary sphere. Biography Kaya was born Simone Lucrece Lamizana in 1937 in Bouaflé, Ivory Coast. Her family was originally from French Upper Volta, now Burkina Faso, and spoke Dioula, Samo, and Baoulé as well as French. Her father wanted his daughters to learn to read and write, so he sent her off to school in Bocanda. At age 13, Kaya left for France, where she studied to become a nurse.
