Faraj Abbo
Faraj Abbo al Numan (; November 21, 1921 – March 5, 1984), more commonly Faraj Abu, Faraj Aboo or simply Faraj Abou, was an influential Assyrian Iraqi artist, theatre director, designer, author and educator, noted as one of the early artists to integrate Arabic script into his abstract paintings and who achieved international recognition for his artwork. Life and career Faraj Abbo was born on 21 November 1921 in Mosul. His artistic talents were evident at a very young age. At 13 years, he was commissioned to produce paintings for local churches in Mosul; such as the work now in Mar Eshai Church. He received his early art education at the Baghdad Central Secondary School in 1939. He taught Art at Al Hilah High School in Al Hilah, Iraq, as well as the Teachers Centre in Baquba until 1945. Stanley Maude
Lieutenant-General Sir Frederick Stanley Maude KCB CMG DSO (24 June 1864 – 18 November 1917) was a British Army officer. He is known for his operations in the Mesopotamian campaign during the First World War and for conquering Baghdad in 1917. Early life Maude was born in Gibraltar, the youngest son of General Sir Frederick Francis Maude, who had been awarded the Victoria Cross in 1855 during the Crimean War, and of Catherine Mary, ''née'' Bisshopp, daughter of Very Reverend Sir George Bisshopp, 9th Baronet, Dean of Lismore. The Maude family claimed descent from Eustace de Montaut, who came over to England during the Norman Conquest. Apo Avedissian
Apo Avedissian (born 24 July 1990 in Baghdad, Iraq) is an Iraqi-American artist of Armenian descent, often working in film-making, painting, photography, and writing. Avedissian’s writing portfolio most notably includes the autobiographical book “Thirteen in Baghdad,” detailing his life as a teenager in Baghdad during the 2003 Iraq War. Personal life Avedissian started his path into the world of photography and his documentary-style videography at the age of thirteen, at the beginning of the 2003 Iraq War. He was born to Armenian parents, both of whom were children/grandchildren of Armenian genocide survivors whose journey through the desert had ended in Iraq. Halla Ayla
Halla Ayla (born in 1957) is an Iraqi American artist and self-taught photographer, currently living in San Francisco, CA. She is noted for her activism and is a champion of women's rights and also works to encourage peace and understanding between the Arab world and the West. These causes are reflected in her artwork. Early life and career Ayla was born Baghdad, Iraq and grew up in Baghdad and in Beirut, Lebanon. Ayla divided her time between Iraq, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia, after which she lived in Europe for 15 years before travelling to the United States in 1991 and finally settling in San Francisco. Suad Al-Attar
Suad al-Attar (Arabic, ''سعاد العطار''; born 1942) is an Iraqi painter whose work is in private and public collections worldwide, including The British Museum and the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian, Gulbenkian Collection. She has held over twenty solo exhibitions, including one in Baghdad that became the first solo exhibition in the country's history for a woman artist. Her many awards include the first prize at the International wikt:biennale, Biennale in Cairo in 1984 and an award of distinction at the Biennale held in Malta in 1995. Layla Al-Attar
Layla Al-Attar (; May 7, 1944 – June 27, 1993) was an Iraqi artist and painter who became the Director of the Iraqi National Art Museum. Through her art, al-Attar expressed ideals that attempted to recognize the importance of women in all spheres of society. She said of her work, "I am trying to bring into the society the role of women, the dignity of their existence, and their humanity by means of lines blended with waves of color, sincere feelings, and true wishes ..." Life and career Al-Attar graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad in 1965, and was among the first female graduates from that program. She became the Director of the Center for National Art (now the Iraqi Museum of Modern Art), a post she held until her death in 1993. Sinan Antoon
Sinan Antoon () is an Iraqi poet, novelist, scholar, and literary translator. He has been described as "one of the most acclaimed authors of the Arab world." Alberto Manguel described him as "one of the great fiction writers of our time.” He is an associate professor at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University. Life and career Antoon was born in 1967 in Baghdad. He received his B.A. in English with distinction from the University of Baghdad in 1990 with minors in Arabic and Translation. Ghazi ibn Faisal () (21 March 1912 – 4 April 1939) was King of Iraq from 1933 to 1939 having been briefly Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Syria in 1920.
