This is a list of American Civil War units from Iowa which fought in the Union Army. A total of 48 infantry regiments, nine cavalry regiments, and four artillery batteries were raised from Iowa. 27th Iowa Infantry Regiment
The 27th Iowa Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 27th Iowa Infantry was organized at Dubuque, Iowa and mustered in for three years of Federal service on October 3, 1862. As soon as it was mustered in the Regiment was sent north to help deal with the Sioux uprising in Minnesota. Iowa was in the Army's newly formed Department of the Northwest commanded by Major General John Pope at Fort Snelling. The regiment was mustered out on August 8, 1865. The 25th Iowa Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 25th Iowa Infantry was organized at Mount Pleasant, Iowa and mustered in for three years of Federal service on September 27, 1862. They were immediately sent north to Minnesota assigned to the Department of the Northwest. 23rd Iowa Infantry Regiment
The 23rd Iowa Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service Battle of Champion's Hill On May 16, 1863, attached to General Carr's Fourteenth Division, the regiment was in reserve almost the entire battle. Near the end of the battle, the 23rd was ordered to pursue the retreating Confederate army. The regiment succeeded in capturing multiple prisoners, as well as large quantities of stores from the retreating army. The command to pursue, however, was given too late for General Carr to successfully cut the rebels off from making their escape, which enabled many of the remaining Confederates to mass at the Big Black River despite the assistance of the 23rd and other regiments. The 22nd Iowa Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 22nd Iowa Infantry, also known as the "Johnson County Regiment", was organized at Iowa City, Iowa and mustered in for three years of Federal service on September 9, 1862. Companies A, B, F, G, H, I, and K were credited to Johnson County. Companies C, D and E were credited to Jasper, Monroe and Wapello counties, respectively. After garrison duty in Missouri, the regiment served in Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's Vicksburg Campaign, Vicksburg Campaign of 1863 as part of the XIII Corps. The 19th Iowa Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service The 19th Iowa Infantry was organized at Keokuk, Iowa and mustered in for three years of Federal service on August 25, 1862. It was the second Iowa regiment to fully muster for active service. The 19th Iowa was assigned to Orme's Brigade, Heron's Division, Army of the Frontier. After completing a rigorous 35 mile march on December 6, 1862, the regiment prepared for battle.
