Hawthorn Football Club
The Hawthorn Football Club, nicknamed the Hawks, is a professional Australian rules football club based in Mulgrave, Victoria, that competes in the Australian Football League (AFL). The club was founded in 1902 in the inner-east suburb of Hawthorn, Victoria, Hawthorn, making it the youngest Victorian-based team in the AFL. Hawthorn is the only club to have won premierships in each decade of the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. In total, it has won 13 senior VFL/AFL premierships. The team play in brown-and-gold vertically striped Guernsey (Australian rules football), guernseys. Edward 'Ted' Fletcher (13 December 1925 - 13 May 2000) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Hawthorn in the VFL. Fletcher was used in a variety of positions during his career including the ruck and in defence. In 1953 he was appointed club captain and won the Hawthorn 'Best and Fairest' award. He retained the captaincy in the 1954 season. Peter O'Donohue
Peter O'Donohue (14 June 1923 – 4 November 2012) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Hawthorn in the VFL during the 1940s. O'Donohue usually played in defence or in the centre and played 109 games with Hawthorn. He was made captain during the 1950 season and kept that position until the end of 1952. His time at Hawthorn was interrupted by his service in the Royal Australian Navy during World War II. In 1953 he went to Western Australia, where he became captain coach of West Perth for two seasons. Kevin Curran (footballer, Born 1920)
Kevin Stanley Curran (10 December 1920 – 20 April 1978) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Hawthorn Football Club, Hawthorn in the Australian Football League, VFL during the 1940s. Curran was recruited to Hawthorn from Traralgon and played his first game with them in 1940. A rover, he made his debut in a game against Fitzroy but internal disputes over his selection ensured that it would be the only time he appeared in the season. Instead of staying on at Hawthorn he enlisted in the army, fighting against the Japanese in Dili. In 1946 he made a return to Hawthorn and the following season represented Victoria at the 1947 Hobart Carnival, Hobart Carnival, the first on 9 interstate appearances during his career. Alec Albiston
Alec Marsh Albiston (16 November 1917 – 13 April 1998) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Hawthorn in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and with North Melbourne for his final season. A goalkicking rover, he was captain and coach of Hawthorn between 1947 and 1949. Playing career Albiston was small in stature and a fitness fanatic. He took great pride in being able to run out a game. One of his personal aims was to run as fast in the last quarter as he had in the first and his remarkable durability ensured he never missed a game through injury. This fitness base saw him play many brilliant and tenacious games as a rover. He was very skilful and was constantly named in the press reports amongst the best players afield. Keith Shea
Keith Sylvester Shea (10 August 1914 – 27 February 1951) was an Australian rules footballer who played at high levels in both Victoria and Western Australia. His senior VFL playing career spanned from 1932 to 1945, although it was interrupted by the war and he continued on playing country football until 1950. Family The son of Stephen Sylvester Shea (1890-1958), and Florence Kathleen Shea (1891-1958), née Dowling, Keith Sylvester Shea was born at Bacchus Marsh, Victoria on 10 August 1914. He married Linda Jessie Elin Tuke (1914-1977) on 25 November 1940. Football Shea was a half forward and played with from 1932 to 1937. Jim Bohan
James Joseph Vincent Bohan (21 July 1919 – 13 October 1967) was a former Australian rules footballer who played with Hawthorn in the VFL. He played in the centre or at centre half forward. Bohan captained Hawthorn in 1944 and 1946 and despite playing with the club for almost a decade, he never once appeared in a finals match. He won Hawthorn's 'Best and Fairest' award in 1943 and 1945. In a match against Vehicle Park in Albury in September 1945, Bohun kicked 20 goals. Bob Williams (Australian Rules Footballer)
Robert Williams (14 April 1913 – 30 June 2004) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Hawthorn in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Used mostly on the wing or half forward flanks, Williams spent 13 years at Hawthorn, after coming to the club from Canterbury. Jack Carmody
John Henry Carmody (7 June 1911 – 28 March 1982) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Collingwood and Hawthorn in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Carmody was member of Collingwood's back-to-back premierships in 1935 and 1936. He was used mostly on the wing and during the late 1930s often found himself on the sidelines due to the strength of the Collingwood side. Len Thomas
Len Thomas (20 July 1908 – 17 August 1943) was an Australian rules footballer who played 187 games with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL), before finishing his career as captain-coach at both Hawthorn and North Melbourne. He was the son of South Melbourne player William Thomas. Football career Thomas made his debut for South Melbourne in 1927 and went on to become one of their better players during the 1930s. He won the club's Best and Fairest award in 1931 and 1938. A premiership player in 1933, he played through the centre in their Grand Final victory over Richmond. In 1939 he moved to Hawthorn where he had accepted the role of captain-coach and the club finished tenth. The following season he crossed to North Melbourne with the same leadership role. Ivan McAlpine
Ivan George McAlpine (19 July 1907 – 16 April 1992) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Footscray and Hawthorn in the Victorian Football League (VFL). McAlpine was wingman and regularly represented Victoria in interstate football. He won the inaugural Footscray Best and Fairest award in 1927 and won the award again in 1930 and 1932. For consecutive seasons in 1931 and 1932 he finished in the top 5 of the Brownlow Medal count. Having captained Footscray in 1933, his job at Menzies Creek made it difficult for him to attend training so he crossed over to Hawthorn which was closer. He had accepted the role of captain-coach. Despite retiring as a player in 1937 he stayed at the club for the following season as coach. After the war, McAlpine taught and captain-coached the local St James side near Benalla.
