Hartlepool ( ) is a seaside and port town in County Durham, England. It is governed by a unitary authority borough named after the town. The borough is part of the devolved Tees Valley area with an estimated population of 92,600. The old town was founded in the 7th century, around the monastery of Hartlepool Abbey, on a headland. As the village grew into a town, in the Middle Ages, its harbour served as the County Palatine of Durham's official port. The new town of West Hartlepool was created, in 1835, after a new port was built and railway links from the South Durham coal fields (to the west) and from Stockton-on-Tees (to the south) were created. A parliamentary constituency covering both the old town and West Hartlepool was created, in 1867, called The Hartlepools. Fred Westgarth
Fred Westgarth (July 1887 in South Shields, England – 4 February 1957) was an English footballer though he is more renowned for his role as a manager. Career Westgarth was a successful football coach after a playing career achieved little of note. He was South Shields' assistant trainer before he joined Ebbw Vale, Workington and Luton Town in a training capacity. In 1938 he joined Stockport County as trainer-manager. In December 1936 he moved to Carlisle United not waiting to see his Stockport side win the Division Three (North) title that season. In March 1938 he resigned at Carlisle to move to Bradford City. He helped Bradford to lift its first honour for ten years, albeit in only the Third Division North Challenge Cup, in 1938-39. The following season, World War Two interrupted English football. Alan Murray (footballer)
Alan Murray (born 5 December 1949) is an English former football player, coach and manager. Biography Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Murray spent the first years of his playing career at Middlesbrough, gradually honing his coaching skills as he struggled to break into the first team. He later moved on to York City, Brentford and Doncaster Rovers before finishing his playing career at Frickley Athletic. His coaching skills were put to the test at Hartlepool United in 1991 when, with boss Cyril Knowles battling against a brain tumour that was to eventually prove fatal, Murray was shuffled from his chief executive role to the position of manager. A 17-month stint at Darlington followed where he gradually pulled the team away from the foot of the Football League before he teamed up with former teammate Graeme Souness at Southampton. Bobby Moncur
Robert Moncur (born 19 January 1945) is a Scottish former professional footballer. Moncur is most famous for his role as captain of Newcastle United in the late 1960s and of the Scotland national side in the early 1970s. Moncur was part of the Newcastle team that won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969, scoring three goals across the two legs of the final. Early life and playing career Robert Moncur was born on 19 January 1945 in Perth. He made nearly 300 appearances for Newcastle United and captained the club to their triumph in the 1968–69 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. After departing Newcastle, Moncur signed for Sunderland. 1967–68 Football League
The 1967–68 season was the 69th completed season of the English Football League. For the first time since 1937 Manchester City won the league title, finishing two points clear of their local rivals Manchester United. Fulham finished bottom of the league and were relegated along with Sheffield United. Coventry City, in their first ever top flight season escaped relegation by one point and would go on to stay in the top division until their eventual relegation at the end of the 2000–01 season. Bill McGarry's Ipswich Town team won the Second Division by one point from Queens Park Rangers, with both teams promoted. Blackpool finished third on goal average and so missed out. Rotherham United and bottom club Plymouth Argyle were both relegated to the Third Division.
