''Doctors'' is a British medical soap opera which began broadcasting on BBC One on 26 March 2000. Set in the fictional West Midlands town of Letherbridge, the soap follows the lives of the staff and patients of the Mill Health Centre, a fictional NHS doctor's surgery, as well as its sister surgery located at a nearby university campus. The following is a list of characters that first appeared in ''Doctors'' in 2016, by order of first appearance. All characters are introduced by the programme's executive producer, Mike Hobson. Ricky Delaine (Neil Roberts) makes a guest appearance in February, while Ben Owens (James Daffern) is introduced in March as a short-term love interest for Niamh Donoghue (Jessica Regan). Lucy-Jo Hudson
Lucy-Jo Hudson (born 4 May 1983) is an English actress, known for her roles as Katy Harris (Coronation Street), Katy Harris in ''Coronation Street'', Rosie Trevanion in ''Wild at Heart (British TV series), Wild at Heart'' and Donna-Marie Quinn in ''Hollyoaks''. Sarah Moyle
Sarah Moyle (born 14 September 1969) is an English actress. She is known for her role as Valerie Pitman in the BBC soap opera ''Doctors'', for which she won the award for Best Comedy Performance at the 2019 British Soap Awards. She also has appeared in stage productions since the 1990s, with various West End and Broadway theatre credits. Moyle has also appeared in recurring television roles in '' Extras'' and ''Emmerdale''. Valerie Pitman is a fictional character from the BBC soap opera ''Doctors'', portrayed by Sarah Moyle. Valerie was introduced as a temporary receptionist at the fictional Mill Health Centre on 15 October 2012. Valerie is depicted as a kind, nosy and humorous character who enjoys getting involved in other people's lives. Her backstory involves growing up as an only child with no friends who dresses differently to other people, so since she feels like an outsider, she is desperate to be part of a unit of loved ones. Eleanor Amy Dido Deloince, known professionally as Dido Miles, is an English actress. She is known for her role as Emma Reid on the BBC soap opera ''Doctors'', for which she won two awards for at the RTS Midlands Awards. Lena Baker
Lena Baker (June 8, 1900 – March 5, 1945) was an African American maid in Cuthbert, Georgia, United States, who was convicted of capital murder of a white man, Ernest Knight. She was executed by the Georgia (U.S. state), state of Georgia in 1945. Baker was the only woman in Georgia to be executed by electrocution. The execution came during a decades-long period of state suppression of civil rights of black citizens in white-dominated Georgia. The state had Disfranchisement after Reconstruction era, disenfranchised black people since the turn of the century, and imposed legal racial segregation and second-class status on them. At the time of the trial, a local newspaper reported that Baker was held as a "slave woman" by Knight, and that she shot him in self-defense during a struggle.
