A Cossack host ( uk, козацьке військо, translit=kozatske viisko; russian: каза́чье во́йско, ''kazachye voysko''), sometimes translated as Cossack army, was an administrative subdivision of Cossacks in the Russian Empire. Earlier the term ''viisko'' (wikt:host#Etymology_2, host) referred to Cossack organizations in their historical territories, most notable being the Zaporozhian Host of Ukrainian Cossacks. Serge Jaroff
Serge Alexis Jaroff (russian: Серге́й Алексе́евич Жа́ров) ( – 5 October 1985) was the founder, conductor and composer of the Don Cossack Choir Serge Jaroff. Biography Jaroff was born in Makaryev, Kostroma Governorate, Russian Empire. He trained at the Moscow Synod School for Choral Singing. He served as a Don Cossack lieutenant in the Russian Civil War. In 1920, the Don Army were driven into the Crimea by the Red Army. From there they evacuated to a Turkish internment camp near Constantinople, (now Istanbul). In January 1921, Jaroff put together a choir from Russian refugees in the internment camp. Most of the singers who later performed in the Don Cossacks Choir had been members of the Don divisions since the war in 1914. The 3rd Don division in March 1921 was interned on the Greek island of Lemnos. Then the troops, including the singers, were shipped to Burgas, Bulgaria. Emilio Kosterlitzky
Emilio Kosterlitzky (Russian: Эмилио Костерлицкий; 16 November 1853 – 2 March 1928) was a Russian-born Mexican colonel during the Mexican Revolution. He had also served in the Mexican Apache Wars and Yaqui Wars. He is most noted for being the commander of the Mexican Rurales, or border police, during the late Nineteenth Century. Biography Emil Kosterlitzky was born on November 16, 1853 in Moscow, to a German mother and Russian Cossack father. He was noted for his language ability; he spoke Russian, Polish, Spanish, French, Italian, English, German, Danish, and Swedish. In his teens, Emil joined the Russian Navy as a midshipman. By 1871, at the age of 18, he deserted his ship in Venezuela. Kosterlitzky then traveled to the Mexican state of Sonora, where he changed his name to ''Emilio'' and joined the Mexican Army.
