The following is a list of Christian death metal bands. Christian death metal consists of death metal music fused with Christian metal; that is, death metal music with Christian lyrical content, or from bands whose members profess Christianity, or both. Because of the gory, violent, and often vehemently anti-Christian or Satanic lyrics typical of the death metal genre, Christian death metal is often considered an oxymoron and odd juxtaposition by commentators and has also encountered resistance from some Christians. Christian death metal emerged in the late-1980s through the mid-1990s through the outputs of Mortification, Vomitorial Corpulence, and Paramaecium in Australia, Opprobrium, Living Sacrifice, and Crimson Thorn in the United States, Sympathy in Canada, and the early work of Antestor in Norway. Immortal Souls
Immortal Souls is a melodic death metal band from Kokkola, Finland, formed in 1991. They released a split album and their debut on Little Rose Productions in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In 2002, Immortal Souls signed with Dutch label Fear Dark which released their second and third album as well as a compilation. They have performed at Tuska Open Air Metal Festival. Their musical style is characterized by their use of melodic guitar riffs and singing which shifts between growls and shouting. Their music has been called winter metal since Immortal Souls utilizes frosty metaphors in their lyrics and usually creates a cold, wintry atmosphere. Believer (band)
Believer is an American technical thrash metal band from Pennsylvania. Formed in 1986, the band plays a hybrid of thrash and progressive metal, and is also known for their innovative use of symphonic elements.Wagner 2010, p. 155 Their lyrics deal with topics of philosophy, theology and social issues. The two primary members of the band are vocalist/bassist/guitarist Kurt Bachman and drummer Joey Daub, who were joined by several others after their 1989 debut album, '' Extraction from Mortality''. The band was jointly signed to Roadrunner Records and the Christian label R.E.X. Music. According to AllMusic, several mainstream magazines praised their second album '' Sanity Obscure''. Antidemon
Antidemon is a Christian extreme metal band from São Paulo, Brazil. The band was founded in 1994 by Carlos Batista. The band has been compared to death metal acts such as Morbid Angel and Suffocation. History Antidemon was formed on January 12, 1994, with founding members Carlos Batista on vocals, Alexandre Cebotorov on bass, Kleber Albino on guitars, Sergio Gonçalves on guitars, and Elke Garzoli (Batista's wife) on drums. The band issued a demo later that year. After that, Cebotorov and Gonçalves left forcing Batista to become the band's bassist. The band did another demo in 1997 and a third in 1998. Tortured Conscience
Tortured Conscience is a Christian extreme metal band from San Francisco, California. History Tortured Conscience formed in 2000 with the lineup of just two members, Jeff Lenormand on guitars and bass and Shannon Frye on drums and vocals. In 2001, the band released their first demo, titled ''Faces of God''. The demo was re-released through ''The Collection Vol. 1: Tools of the Trade'', a split release with Royal Anguish and Soul of the Savior in 2002. Becoming the Archetype is an American extreme metal band formed in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1999. They have released six albums on Solid State Records. Aletheian
Aletheian are a Christian progressive death metal, progressive/melodic death metal band. They formed in Lebanon, Pennsylvania in 1997 under the name Crutch, and then changed their name to "Aletheian" prior to the 2003 album ''Apolutrosis''. Guitarist Alex Kenis joined Becoming the Archetype in 2007. In the early 2007, Aletheian signed to IronClad Recordings, an imprint of Metal Blade Records. Biography Aletheian was originally formed under the name Crutch in 1997. Embodyment was a Christian rock band from Arlington, Texas. The group formed in 1992 and were first known by the name Supplication where they originally played death metal. The band changed its style for its debut album '' Embrace the Eternal'', which is credited as one of the earliest deathcore releases. Holy Blood is a folk metal band from Kyiv, Ukraine, formed in 1999. The band is notable for being one of the few Christian bands in its genre, and the fact that they are the most successful group on its label Bombworks Records, and the band has been noted worldwide despite being an underground group. Sacrificium
Sacrificium is a Christian death metal band from Stuttgart, Germany, formed in 1993. The band made its breakthrough in the metal scene with its 2002 album ''Cold Black Piece of Flesh''. The second album ''Escaping the Stupor'' was released on Black Lotus Records. Their music combines melodic passages with old school death metal, and their lyrics deal with personal experiences and opinions from Christian point of view. Pantokrator (band)
Pantokrator is a Swedish Christian metal band that was formed in 1996. The band's name means "Lord Almighty" in Ancient Greek. Several members have been in Crimson Moonlight and Sanctifica. Background Pantokrator was formed in fall 1996 as a cover band. The band then decided to play songs written by themselves. It has had six members overall: Jonas Wallinder (bass guitar), Rickard Gustafsson (drums), Karl Walfridsson (vocals) and Matthias Johansson, and Johnathan Jansson (guitars).
