Ernest Shipman
Ernest G. Shipman (December 16, 1871, in Shipman's Mills (now Almonte, Ontario, Almonte), Ontario, Canada – August 7, 1931, in New York City) was Canada's most successful film producer during the silent film, silent period. Shipman, whose nickname was "Ten Percent Ernie," made seven features from 1919 to 1923. Biography Shipman was educated at the Ryerson School (now Toronto Metropolitan University) in Toronto, Ontario and became interested in promotion and publicity. At 26 he was running the Canadian Entertainment Bureau in Toronto and soon after was the president and general manager of the Amalgamated Amusement Company with offices on Broadway (Manhattan), Broadway in New York City. In 1912, he divorced his third wife, actress Roselle Knott, and married his fourth wife, Nell (born Helen Barham) from Victoria, B.C., who was 18 at the time. Wheeler Oakman
Wheeler Oakman (born Vivian Eichelberger; February 21, 1890 – March 19, 1949) was an American film actor. Early years Oakman was born as Vivian Eichelberger in Washington, D.C., and educated in that city's schools—specifically Henry School and William McKinley Manual Training School—after having spent the bulk of his childhood in Fairfax, Virginia. Career Before acting in films, Oakman was active in Repertory theatre, stock theater in the eastern United States. Oakman appeared in over 280 films between 1912 and 1948. In silent films, he was often a leading man. Among his leading ladies were Priscilla Dean, Kathlyn Williams, Colleen Moore and Annette Kellerman. Nell Shipman
Nell Shipman (born Helen Foster-Barham; October 25, 1892 – January 23, 1970) was a Canadian actress, writer, and director who was active in silent film in the 1910s and 1920s. She used "the girl from God's country" as her sobriquet after starring in ''God's Country and the Woman''. Born in Victoria, British Columbia, in 1892, her family moved to Seattle, Washington, in 1904. She became interested in performing arts while on a family vacation in the United Kingdom and joined a vaudeville group in 1905. While working in a play she met and married Ernest Shipman and the couple moved to California. Shipman wrote and directed a few films before receiving a contract with Vitagraph Studios. After doing ten films with Vitagraph she formed her own company and adapted James Oliver Curwood's ''Wapi the Walrus'' into '' Back to God's Country''. Back To God's Country (1919 Film)
''Back to God's Country'' is a 1919 Canadian drama film directed by David Hartford. It is one of the earliest Canadian feature films. The film starred and was co-written by Canadian actress Nell Shipman. Curwood's story was adapted to the screen by Nell herself. She changed the protagonist of the film from a great dane to the female lead, Dolores. Shipman also shaped her character into a heroine, who saves her husband. Curwood was infuriated with Shipman, but commercially the film was extremely successful, posting a 300 percent profit and grossing a million-and-a-half dollars. Cast Production After leaving Vitagraph Studios, Nell Shipman created a contract with James Oliver Curwood in order to adapt and star in adaptations of his work.
