ARTIST
An artist is a person engaged in an activity related to creating art, practicing the arts, or demonstrating the work of art. The most common usage (in both everyday speech and academic discourse) refers to a practitioner in the visual arts only. Barthélémy Toguo
Barthélémy Toguo (born 1967) is a Cameroonian painter, visual and performing artist. He currently splits his time living and working in both Paris, France and Bandjoun, Cameroon. LucFosther Diop
Lucas Fotsing Takou (born 1980), known as LucFosther Diop, is a Cameroonian artist, filmmaker, actor and entrepreneur. As an artist, he is best known for his drawings, collages, performances and films exploring the ongoing repercussions of the western neocolonialism and imperialism within the contemporary context of globalisation. Early life and career LucFosther Diop was born in 1980 in Douala. After spending his young age having a very difficult relationship specially with his father, at the age of 17, he moved from the family house in Douala to his uncle's place in Bafoussam ( West Region, Cameroon) where he got his diploma of secondary studies in 2000. Then, went to study fine arts in Yaoundé where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Yaoundé I in 2003. Ginette Daleu
Ginette Daleu (born 23 September 1977; died 9 November 2018) was an artist from Cameroon. Biography Ginette Flore Daleu was born in 1977 at Metet in Cameroon. She was a degree from the Institut de Formation Artistique in Mbalmayo and graduated in 2000. She also attended the Libera Accademia di Belle Arti in Brescia in Italy. Daleu had created art from a young age and knew she wanted to be an artist, against the wishes of her family. Daleu died at her home in Senegal on 9 November 2018, following an illness. Career In 2006, Daleu was part of a collective of artists who travelled from Douala to Dak'art, exploring how to revitalise art education in Cameroon along the way. This project was called ''Exit Tour'' and the group travelled overland, meeting people and working with artists and students along the way. SUD Salon Urbain De Douala
The SUD Salon Urbain de Douala (meaning South - Urban Festival of Douala) is a triennial festival of public art and contemporary art organised in Douala, Cameroon. The festival had its first edition in 2007 and it is promoted by the art centre and cultural organisation doual'art. History The SUD Salon Urbain de Douala was announced during the ''Ars&Urbis International Symposium'' organised in Douala in 2005 by doual'art; the Ars&Urbis focussed on the relationship between art and urban transformations and it was created as a preparatory research gathering for the SUD. ArtBakery
ArtBakery is an art centre based in the village of Bonendale a few kilometers from Douala and founded by Goddy Leye. The centre offers trainings for emerging artists (Master Class), journalists (Art Daily) and residency programs for young artists (Portfolio). ArtBakery is specifically designed to technically support the production of multimedia artworks, video and digital art. History ArtBakery is founded in 2002 after the artist Goddy Leye moves back to Cameroon from the Netherlands. The centre is part of the Rijksakademie International Network (RAIN), a network of artists who support contemporary cultural practices in their countries of origin. Doual'art
doual'art is a non profit cultural organisation and art centre founded in 1991 in Douala, Cameroon and focussed on new urban practices of African cities. History doual'art was registered as a non profit organization in 1992 and it was established by Marilyn Douala Bell and Didier Schaub. In 1995 they created ''Espace doual'art'', an exhibition space and gallery in the neighbourhood of Bonanjo in Douala. In 1996 they produced La Nouvelle Liberté by Joseph-Francis Sumégné, considered a landmark in Douala. In 2005 they organized the first Ars&Urbis event, an international symposium to foster discussion and theory about the contribution of art to urban transformation. Simon Njami
Simon Njami (born 1962 in Lausanne) is a writer and an independent curator, lecturer, art critic and essayist. Career Writing Njami published his first novel, ''Cercueil et Cie'', in 1985, followed by ''Les Enfants de la Cité'' in 1987, and ''Les Clandestins'' and ''African Gigolo'' in 1989. He has written biographies of James Baldwin and Léopold Sédar Senghor, several short texts, scripts for cinema, and documentary films. Njami is the co-founder of '' Revue Noire'', a journal of contemporary African and extra-occidental art, and he was visiting professor at the University of California, San Diego.
