They were responsible for representing British interests in the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman while the country was a British protectorate (from 20 March 1891 until 2 December 1971). Muscat ( ar, مَسْقَط, ) is the capital and most populated city in Oman. It is the seat of the Governorate of Muscat. Major-General Sir Percy Zachariah Cox (20 November 1864 – 20 February 1937) was a British Indian Army officer and Colonial Office administrator in the Middle East. He was one of the major figures in the creation of the current Middle East. Family and early life Cox was born in Harwood Hall, Herongate, Essex, one of seven children born to Julienne Emily ( Saunders) Cox and cricketer Arthur Zachariah Cox ( Button). He was educated initially at Harrow School where he developed interests in natural history, geography, and travel. Colonel Sir James Hayes Sadler (21 May 1827 – 9 January 1910) was a British diplomat and civil servant. Early life and education Sadler was born to the Reverend James-Hayes Sadler (5 January 1785 – 26 August 1845) and Anne Sadler (née Rich, died 27 September 1847) in Keynsham Bury, Gloucester, England. He was educated at Eton and Oxford. Career In 1854 Sadler was commissioned into the Royal Sussex Militia Artillery, a newly formed part-time home defence unit of the Royal Artillery (RA). Colonel Sir Charles Edward Yate, 1st Baronet, (28 August 1849 – 29 February 1940) was an English soldier and administrator in British India and later a politician in Britain. Early life Yate was born at Holme-on-Spalding-Moor, Yorkshire, the son of the village's vicar. He was educated at Shrewsbury School and Rossall School and in 1867 purchased an Ensigncy in the 49th Foot. Atmaram Sadashiv Grandin/Grovindin Jayakar (1844–1911), known also as Muscati, was an Indian naturalist, military physician, and colonial administrator in the British Empire. Jayakar, who was of Marathi Pathare Prabhu origin, began his studies in India where he earned his Bachelors of Medicine and Surgery, and then went to England to complete his medical studies. Later, he returned to India to work in the Indian Medical Service, in which he ultimately achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1873, he was sent by the British Empire to the Sultanate of Muscat and Oman (an Arab country that was under a British protectorate) to deal with the health of the people of Muscat, in which capacity he also served as a personal physician to Sultan Turki bin Said.
