The history of the Jews in Latin America began with conversos who joined the Spanish and Portuguese expeditions to the continents. The Alhambra Decree of 1492 led to the mass conversion of Spain's Jews to Catholicism and the expulsion of those who refused to do so. Many conversos, Jews who converted to Christianity under pressure during the Spanish Inquisition, did travel to the New World. While the Spanish Crown required settlers to be of Catholic lineage, conversos often presented themselves as devout Catholics to meet this requirement. Some sought refuge in the Americas to escape persecution of the Inquisition, which followed them even to the Spanish viceregal towns. In places like Mexico and New Mexico, conversos maintained their faith in secret while outwardly adhering to Catholic practices. Lucas Matías Licht
Lucas Matías Licht (born 6 April 1981) is an Argentine professional former footballer who played as a left-back but also as a left winger. Club career Born in Rosario, Santa Fe, Licht grew up in the youth academy of Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, starting as a midfielder and making his professional debut in 2001. For three years, Israeli club Maccabi Haifa F.C. had him on the club's transfer shortlist due to his Jewish heritage, as he would not count as a foreigner; he eventually joined Maccabi Netanya F.C. for a trial, but they decided not to offer him a contract. Jonathan "Jonny" Tennenbaum (; born 1 September 1979) is an Argentine-Israeli former association football player. Playing career Tennenbaum arrived in Israel as part of the Argentine football team for the Maccabiah Games. Afterward one season with Hakoah Ramat Gan, he signed with Hapoel Ashkelon and played alongside fellow Argentine, Carlos Chacana. After a successful time with Ashkelon, Tennenbaum made a stop with Maccabi Kiryat Ata before landing with Hapoel Ra'anana. The Argentine became a fixture in the Ra'anana line-up. Nicolás Tauber (; born August 20, 1980) is a retired Argentine-Israeli footballer. He was born in La Plata, Argentina. Playing career During 2003 the former Maccabi Netanya manager, Gili Landau, spotted Nicolás during a scouting tour of Argentina. Ezra Sued (7 June 1923 – 21 August 2011) was an Argentine international football striker. Career Born in Once, Buenos Aires, Sued began playing club football for local side Racing Club de Avellaneda. He spent his entire professional career with the club, playing from 1943 until 1954 and winning the Argentine championship three times. He played in 308 matches and scored 47 goals for the club. Sued made six appearances and scored two goals for the Argentina national football team, appearing in the 1946 and 1947 South American Championships. Eial Strahman (born 21 June 1989) is an Argentine footballer who plays for Maccabi Herzliya as a forward. Martin Schusterman (born 13 September 1975) is an Argentine retired rugby union footballer. His last club was San Isidro Club. His usual position was at flanker. Schusterman started his career in 1997 with San Isidro Club in Argentina. In 2003 he made his debut for the Argentina national rugby union team and in 2003 he joined Plymouth Albion.
