Limia Sulphurophila
''Limia sulphurophila'', also known as sulphur limia, is a livebearing fish in the family Poeciliidae. It is endemic to the Dominican Republic in the island of Hispaniola. Taxonomic history The holotype (MCZ 54401) is an adult male collected by Ernest Edward Williams, Susan M. Case, and José Rosado at a sulfur spring at Balneario La Zurza, on August 19, 1978. One phylogenetic analysis showed that ''L. sulphurophila'' is a sister species to '' L. melanonotata'' and '' L. perugiae.'' Etymology The name ''sulphurophila'' ("sulfur loving") refers to the ecology of this species, as the type series was collected in a sulfur spring. Morphology Adults and juveniles are pale brown in color, darker dorsally and fading to pale gray on ventral surfaces. Livebearers
Livebearers are aquarium fish that retain the eggs inside the body and give birth to live, free-swimming young. Among aquarium fish, livebearers are nearly all members of the family Poeciliidae and include guppies, mollies, platies and swordtails. The advantages of livebearing to the aquarist are that the newborn juvenile fish are larger than newly-hatched fry, have a lower chance of mortality and are easier to care for. Unusual livebearers include seahorses and pipefish, where the males care for the young, and certain cichlids that are mouthbrooders, with the parent incubating the eggs in the buccal cavity. Hispaniolan Gambusia
The Hispaniolan gambusia (''Gambusia hispaniolae'') is a fish endemic to the island of Hispaniola. Taxonomy William L. Fink wrote its species description in a 1971 revision of the ''Gambusia nicaraguensis'' species group. Some specimens of this species had previously been misidentified as ''Gambusia dominicensis''. Fink named this species after the island of Hispaniola, where this fish is found. The holotype is in the Smithsonian and the type locality is Trou Caïman, Plaine du Cul-de-Sac in Ouest, Haiti.
