Limerick Mayoral Election
The Mayor of Limerick is the head of the local government of the City and County of Limerick. It is a directly elected office with a five-year term. Following the 2024 Limerick mayoral election, John Moran was inaugurated as the first office-holder on 21 June 2024. Prior to June 2024, it was the title used by the chairperson of Limerick City and County Council. Prior to the amalgamation of the city and county councils in 2014, the mayor was the chairperson of Limerick City Council. The office was originally established in 1195 and reinforced by a charter issued in 1197. John Moran (Mayor Of Limerick)
John Moran (born 1965/1966) is an Irish politician who was elected as the Mayor of Limerick, following the 2024 Limerick mayoral election. He was inaugurated on 21 June 2024. Early life Born in Birmingham, Moran was raised on his family's farm in Patrickswell, County Limerick and later in Dooradoyle. He attended St Paul's national school in Dooradoyle, and CBS Sexton Street in Limerick. He obtained a law degree at University College Dublin, followed by a master's from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Career Following his master's degree, Moran passed the New York state bar and worked as a lawyer on Wall Street for three years. He returned to Ireland in 1990 to attain an Irish law qualification, before returning to the United States to run the New York office of McCann Fitzgerald. George Clancy (politician)
George Clancy (; 18 March 1881 – 7 March 1921), was an Irish nationalism, Irish nationalist politician and Mayor of Limerick. He was shot dead in Limerick by Auxiliary Division, Royal Irish Constabulary Auxiliaries in 1921 during the Irish War of Independence. The previous Mayor, Michael O'Callaghan, was assassinated on the same night by the same group. Life Clancy was born at Grange, County Limerick. Limerick Soviet
The Limerick Soviet () was one of a number of self-declared Irish soviets that were formed around Ireland circa 1919. The Limerick Soviet existed for a two-week period from 14 to 27 April 1919. At the beginning of the Irish War of Independence, a general strike was organised by the Limerick Trades and Labour Council, as a protest against the British Army's declaration of a "Special Military Area" under the Defence of the Realm Act, which covered most of Limerick city and a part of the county. The soviet ran the city for the period, printed its own money and organised the supply of food. The Limerick Soviet was one of a number of Irish soviets declared between 1919 and 1923. Alphonsus M. ("Phons") O'Mara (13 October 1887 – 16 February 1958) was a businessman and Irish republican Mayor of Limerick 1918-20. Garryowen Football Club (Irish: ''Cumann Rugbaí Gharraí Eoin''), usually referred to as Garryowen, is a rugby union club from Limerick, Ireland. As at the 2024–25 season, it plays in Division 1A of the All-Ireland League. Historically, Garryowen has been one of the most successful clubs in Irish rugby union. Irish National League
The Irish National League (INL) was a nationalist political party in Ireland. It was founded on 17 October 1882 by Charles Stewart Parnell as the successor to the Irish National Land League after this was suppressed. Whereas the Land League had agitated for land reform, the National League also campaigned for self-government or Irish Home Rule, further enfranchisement and economic reforms. The League was the main base of support for the Irish Parliamentary Party (IPP), and under Parnell's leadership, it grew quickly to over 1,000 branches throughout the island. In 1884, the League secured the support of the Roman Catholic Church in Ireland. Its secretary was Timothy Harrington who organised the Plan of Campaign in 1886. Michael Joyce (4 September 1851 – 9 January 1941) was an Irish politician who twice served as Mayor of Limerick and was the Member of Parliament for the Limerick City constituency of the United Kingdom Parliament from 1900 until 1918. Early life Joyce was born at Merchant's Quay in Limerick in 1851. His father was a river pilot on the Shannon Estuary approach to the port of Limerick. He was educated by the Christian Brothers, attending three of their schools, including CBS Sexton Street. At the age of fourteen, Joyce left Limerick to serve as a seaman. During his time at sea, he survived four separate shipwrecks. Following his return to Limerick in the early 1870s, he became a pilot for Limerick Harbour Commissioners. John Daly (Fenian)
John Daly (18 October 1845 – 30 June 1916), was an Irish Republicanism, Irish republican, and a leading member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood. He was uncle to Kathleen Clarke, wife of Tom Clarke (Irish republican), Tom Clarke who was executed for his part in the Easter Rising, 1916 Rising and who was a leading member of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, IRB, and her brother Ned Daly who was also executed in 1916.
