Light At The End Of The Tunnel
''The Light at the End of the Tunnel'' is a double compilation album by The Damned (band), the Damned, released by Music Corporation of America, MCA in 1987 as a retrospective collection. The same name was also given to a concurrently released video cassette and an approved band biography by Carol Clerk. The package was marketed as a greatest hits collection, but while it includes many of the band/s acknowledged standards, several of the songs were album tracks, while others were A-side and B-side, B-sides or other rarities. This Damned retrospective, however, is the only one to unite studio recordings from all of the studio albums the band had released between 1977 and 1986. MCA issued the ''Anything (The Damned album), Anything'' album track "In Dulce Decorum" as a single to support the release. ''The Light at the End of the Tunnel'' charted for a week at No. 87 in the UK Album Charts, the band's final chart entry until 2018's ''Evil Spirits (The Damned album), Evil Spirits ... The Damned (band)
The Damned are an English punk rock band formed in London in 1976 by lead vocalist Dave Vanian, guitarist Brian James, bassist (and later guitarist) Captain Sensible, and drummer Rat Scabies. They were the first punk band from the United Kingdom to release a single, " New Rose" (1976), release a studio album, '' Damned Damned Damned'' (1977), and tour the United States. They have nine singles that charted on the UK Singles Chart Top 40. The band briefly broke up after '' Music for Pleasure'' (1977), the follow-up to their debut studio album, was critically dismissed. They quickly reformed without Brian James, and released '' Machine Gun Etiquette'' (1979). In the 1980s they released four studio albums, '' The Black Album'' (1980), ''Strawberries'' (1982), ''Phantasmagoria'' (1985), and '' Anything'' (1986), which saw the band moving towards a gothic rock style. The latter two albums did not feature Captain Sensible, who had left the band in 1984. In 1988, James and Sensible ... Eloise (Paul Ryan Song)
"Eloise" is a song first released in 1968 on the MGM label. It was sung by Barry Ryan, and written by his twin brother Paul Ryan. Running for over five minutes, it features strong orchestration, melodramatic vocals, and a brief slow interlude. It sold three million copies worldwide, and reached No. 2 in the UK Singles Chart as published by ''Record Retailer'', but hit No. 1 in the ''NME'' and ''Melody Maker'' charts. It topped the chart in 17 countries, including Italy, the Netherlands and Australia. The single was released as "Barry Ryan with the Majority". The History Of The World (Part 1)
"The History of the World (Part 1)" is a single by English rock band the Damned, released in September 1980 by Chiswick Records. It was co-produced by the band with Hans Zimmer and was included on the band's '' The Black Album''. The record was released in both 7" and 12" formats, and reached No. 51 in the UK Singles Chart. Critical reception Writing in Smash Hits magazine, reviewer David Hepworth wrote, "The Damned seem to be making overtures to the mainstream, knocking timidly on the door of daytime radio and asking to be let in. With keyboards to the fore instead of the usual guitars, this is not unlike the kind of half baked effort you'd expect from Supertramp, if they were trying to grab a bit of new wave credibility". Love Song (Damned)
"Love Song" is a single by English punk rock band the Damned, released in April 1979. It was the first fruit of the reformed lineup's deal with Chiswick Records, boosted by four variant picture sleeves, each one featuring a member of the band, with an additional 20,000 copies pressed on red vinyl (5,000 for each sleeve). Combined with radio airplay and a catchy song, this yielded the Damned's first hit, peaking at No. 20 in the UK Singles Chart, and leading to the band's debut on ''Top of the Pops''. "Love Song" was included on the band's third album, ''Machine Gun Etiquette'', and was referenced in the album's title track. In February 1982, Chiswick reissued the single on their Big Beat imprint, using only the covers featuring Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible and Rat Scabies (Algy Ward having left the band by this stage). The single was also issued in France, Germany and the Netherlands. Track listing All songs written by Scabies, Sensible, Vanian, Ward. # "Love Song" - 2:03 ... New Rose
"New Rose" by The Damned was the first single by a British punk rock group, released on 22 October 1976 on Stiff Records, and in 1977 in the Netherlands, Germany and France. Written by guitarist Brian James, "New Rose" was also included on the group's full-length debut album, ''Damned Damned Damned''. The deadpan intro by singer Dave Vanian ("Is she really going out with him?") parodied the 1964 Shangri-Las song "Leader of the Pack". The single's B-side was a cover of the Beatles' hit "Help!", performed about twice as fast as the original. Both songs became staples of the Damned's live shows, and appeared on various compilations. "New Rose" was reissued in Stiff's ''Damned 4 Pack'' mail-order set. Original copies had a press-out centre, while reissues had a solid centre. Copies from the four-pack had matrix details: "Bilbo tape" handwritten and "AY 50332" printed. A CD version was issued in the ''Stiff Singles 1976–1977'' boxed set by Castle Music in 2003. Help! (song)
"Help!" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles that served as the title song for the 1965 film and its soundtrack album. It was released as a single in July 1965, and was number one for three weeks in the United States and the United Kingdom. Credited to Lennon–McCartney, "Help!" was written by John Lennon with some help from Paul McCartney. During an interview with '' Playboy'' in 1980, Lennon recounted: "The whole Beatles thing was just beyond comprehension. I was subconsciously crying out for help". It was ranked at number 29 on ''Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Songs of All Time in 2004 and 2010, and then was re-ranked at number 447 in the 2021 list. Smash It Up
"Smash It Up" is a song by English punk rock band the Damned, released as a single on 12 October 1979 by Chiswick Records. It is considered the band's unofficial anthem. The single was the second release from the band's third studio ''Machine Gun Etiquette'' (1979), where it was listed as "Smash It Up (Part II)". The B-side of the single was "Burglar". Production "Smash It Up" was produced by the band and Roger Armstrong. It is structured in two-part form: a melodic instrumental introduction segueing into an energetic pop-punk song. The song's lyrics criticize those who indulge in hippie culture (referring to "blow wave hairstyles" and "Glastonbury hippies") instead of advocating for political revolution. Release Chiswick reissued the single on their budget Big Beat imprint in February 1982. The single was also issued in Australia, Germany, the Netherlands and Spain. "Smash It Up" was boycotted by BBC Radio 1 because of its perceived anarchic lyrics, stalling at No. 35 in t ...
