Lift-off (microtechnology)
{{Refimprove, date=June 2011 The lift-off process in microstructuring technology is a method of creating structures (patterning) of a target material on the surface of a substrate (e.g. wafer) using a sacrificial material (e.g. photoresist). It is an additive technique as opposed to more traditional subtracting technique like etching. The scale of the structures can vary from the nanoscale up to the centimeter scale or further, but are typically of micrometric dimensions. Process An inverse pattern is first created in the sacrificial stencil layer (ex. photoresist), deposited on the surface of the substrate. This is done by etching openings through the layer so that the target material can reach the surface of the substrate in those regions, where the final pattern is to be created. Flame lift-off in oil fired pressure jet burners is an unwanted condition in which the flame and burner become separated. This condition is most commonly created by excessive combustion air and often results in the loss of flame as the photoelectric cell fails to register the light of the flame, this in turn results in a safety lockout of the control box. Other outcomes Other outcomes may be experienced: – # There may be delayed ignition as the oil spray is too far forward for the electrodes to ignite, only when the oil spray has filled the combustion chamber will the mixture ignite. In this condition it is likely that the excessive volume of unburnt oil will ignite with explosive ignition. # The oil mixture will fail to ignite resulting in safety lockout of the control box. # The oil mixture will ignite but may burn very inefficiently due to excessive air chilling of the oil particles to the point where complete combustion of the oil is not possible. Takeoff
Takeoff is the phase of flight in which an aerospace vehicle leaves the ground and becomes airborne. For aircraft traveling vertically, this is known as liftoff. For aircraft that take off horizontally, this usually involves starting with a transition from moving along the ground on a runway. For balloon (aircraft), balloons, helicopters and some specialized fixed-wing aircraft (VTOL aircraft such as the Hawker Siddeley Harrier, Harrier and the Bell Boeing V22 Osprey), no runway is needed. Lift-off Oversteer
Lift-off oversteer (also known as trailing-throttle oversteer, throttle off oversteer, or lift-throttle oversteer) is a form of sudden oversteer. While cornering, a driver who closes the throttle (by lifting a foot off the accelerator, hence the name), usually at a high speed, can cause such sudden deceleration that the vertical load on the tires shifts from rear to front, in a process called load transfer. This decrease in vertical load on the rear tires in turn decreases their traction by lowering their lateral force (that perpendicular to the direction of travel), making the vehicle steer more tightly into the turn. In other words, easing off the accelerator in a fast turn can cause a car's rear tires to loosen their grip so much that the driver loses control and drifts outwards, even leaving the road tailfirst. Lift Off is a public artwork by American artist David Black, located at the CityVista Condominium at the intersection of 5th St NW & K St NW in the Mount Vernon Triangle neighborhood of Washington, D.C., United States. ''Lift Off'' was created through DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. Description ''Lift Off'' is a yellow, canopy like, abstract sculpture that sits on the corner of the CityVista building in front of Busboys and Poets. A welded (3/8-inch x 1/2-inch) aluminum plate with four crossbeams form the main skeleton of the work. Each crossbeam features a small floodlight on the end which illuminates the scallop like, origami inspired parts. A small love seat is placed at the central base for visitors to relax and immerse themselves within the artwork, which is easily accessible to visitors who are encouraged to interact with the piece. ''Lift Off'' is an Australian children's television series that was developed and produced by Patricia Edgar and broadcast on ABC Television from 1992 until the series ended in 1995. Each episode of the series featured a live action storyline about a group of young children, and the problems they encountered with growing up, their parents, and various other social issues. Episodes also featured segments of short animation, puppetry and documentary segments, as well as various songs, stories and word games. Aimed at 3 to 11-year-olds, the series was linked with the school curricula through the Curriculum Corporation of Australia. The different episodes used stories and locations to explore subjects such as jealousy, loneliness and anger.
