Life's Force
''Life's Force'' is an album by trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah, listed simply as "Abdullah" on the cover. His debut as a leader, it was recorded at Blue Rock Studio in New York City, and was issued in 1979 by About Time Records as the label's inaugural release. On the album, Abdullah is joined by hornist Vincent Chancey, cellist Muneer Abdul Fatah, vibraphonist Jay Hoggard, bassist Jerome Hunter, and drummer Rashied Sinan. In 1979, while Abdullah was music director of her dance company, "Life's Force" was choreographed by Dianne McIntyre, and the work was premiered at the Carver Center in San Antonio, Texas. McIntyre described it as "a dance music collaboration" in which "dancers become part of the band." She commented: "Ahmed Abdullah... developed the dance together along with the people in the company. Ahmed Abdullah
Ahmed Abdullah (born Leroy Bland; May 10, 1946) is an American jazz trumpeter who was a prominent member of Sun Ra's band. Biography He began playing the trumpet at age 13 in his native New York City. One of the first groups he performed with was the Master Brotherhood. By the 1970s, he was performing in New York's loft scene with various groups including the Melodic Art-Tet (Charles Brackeen, Roger Blank and Ronnie Boykins, later William Parker) and joined the Sun Ra Arkestra. Ahmed Abdullah formed his own band in 1972 ,and joined the Sun Ra Arkestra in 1975, working there on and off until 1993, when Sun Ra died. He stayed on with the Arkestra after Sun Ra's demise working under the leadership of John Gilmore and then Marshall Allen. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. ''Live at Ali's Alley'' is a live album by trumpeter Ahmed Abdullah, listed simply as "Abdullah" on the cover. It was recorded on April 24, 1978, at New York City's Ali's Alley, and released on vinyl in 1980 by Cadence Jazz Records as the label's inaugural release. On the album, Abdullah is joined by saxophonist Chico Freeman, hornist Vincent Chancey, cellist Muneer Abdul Fatah, bassist Jerome Hunter, and drummer Rashied Sinan. Reception A reviewer for AllMusic stated that the album is "symbolic of the decade's 'loft' jazz, a free-wheeling date with uneven but often compelling solos, as well as periods of rambling, unproductive, and ragged ensemble work. Vincent Chancey
Vincent Chancey (born February 4, 1950) is an American jazz hornist. Early life and education Chancey was born and raised in Chicago. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from the SIUC School of Music in 1973 and studied under Julius Watkins in New York City. Career Chancey began playing professionally in the 1970s, mostly with large ensembles such as the Sun Ra Arkestra, Lester Bowie's Brass Fantasy, David Murray Big Band, Carla Bley Big Band, and the Richard Abrams orchestra. Jay Hoggard
Jay Hoggard (born September 24, 1954) is an American jazz vibraphonist. Biography Jay Hoggard was raised in a religious family. He was born in Washington, D.C., but grew up in Mount Vernon, New York. His mother taught him how to play piano at a young age. At the age of 15, he started to play the vibraphone. Hoggard played piano and saxophone before turning to vibraphone. He worked with Anthony Davis and Leo Smith in the early 1970s in New England. After moving to New York City in 1977, he worked again with Davis and with Chico Freeman, Sam Rivers, Cecil Taylor, James Newton, and Kenny Burrell. He has worked with vibraphonists such as Lionel Hampton, Milt Jackson, Tito Puente and Bobby Hutcherson. Hoggard has played in venues in Africa, South America, Europe, Asia and the Caribbean. Jerome Hunter
Jerome Hunter (born January 14, 1942, Spartanburg, South Carolina) is an American jazz double-bassist. Jerome learned to play guitar in his youth but switched to stand-up bass at age 12, studying formally in both classical and jazz styles. He worked early in the 1960s with Ray Bryant, Roy Haynes, and Philly Joe Jones, then moved increasingly toward free jazz, playing with Marzette Watts in 1964 and Byard Lancaster in 1966–1967. Following this he worked with Ahmed Abdullah, Dorothy Donegan, Johnny Hammond, J. R. Mitchell, Sam Rivers, Sonny Sharrock, and Grover Washington, Jr. He played with Jamaaladeen Tacuma in 1993. Dianne McIntyre (born July 18, 1946) is an American dancer, choreographer, and teacher. Scott Yanow (born October 4, 1954) is an American jazz reviewer, historian, and author. Allmusic Biography/ref> Biography Yanow was born in New York City and grew up near Los Angeles. Since 1974, he was a regular reviewer of many jazz styles and was the jazz editor for ''Record Review.'' He wrote for many jazz and arts magazines, including '' JazzTimes'', ''Jazziz'', '' Down Beat'', ''Cadence'', '' CODA'' and the ''Los Angeles Jazz Scene''.
