The lieutenant governor of Nebraska is the highest-ranking executive official in the State of Nebraska after the Governor of Nebraska, governor. According to the Constitution of Nebraska, Nebraska State Constitution, in the event a governor dies, becomes permanently incapacitated, resigns, or is removed from office, the lieutenant governor will become governor. Prior to the Constitution of 1875, Nebraska had no office of lieutenant governor. If the governor died, resigned, or was removed from office (as happened to Governor David Butler (politician), David Butler in 1871), then the Nebraska Secretary of State was appointed as Acting Governor until the vacancy would be filled by the next election. The Constitution of 1875 created the office of Lieutenant Governor of Nebraska, leading to the first election of a lieutenant governor in Nebraska in the election of 1876. Joe Kelly (attorney)
Joseph Patrick Kelly (born March 17, 1956) is an American attorney and politician who has served as the 42nd lieutenant governor of Nebraska since 2023. He served as the United States attorney for the District of Nebraska from 2018 to 2021. He formerly served as chief of the criminal division for the attorney general of Nebraska. Early life and education Kelly earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Nebraska in 1978 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Nebraska College of Law in 1981. Career Kelly began his legal career in the Lancaster County Attorney's office from 1981 to 1985. He then served as an associate with Berniger, Berg and Diverin Colorado Springs, Colorado, from 1987 to 1990. Albinus Roberts Nance (March 30, 1848 – December 7, 1911) was an Politics of the United States, American politician. He served as a soldier during the American Civil War, and as the List of governors of Nebraska, fourth governor of Nebraska. Nance was born in La Fayette, Illinois on March 30, 1848. George De Rue Meiklejohn
George de Rue Meiklejohn (; August 26, 1857 – April 19, 1929) was an American politician who served as the fifth lieutenant governor of Nebraska under Governor John Milton Thayer and as a member of the United States House of Representatives for Nebraska. He was the United States Assistant Secretary of War from 1897 to 1901. Early life and education de Rue Meiklejohn was born in Weyauwega, Wisconsin, on August 26, 1857. The 1886 Nebraska lieutenant gubernatorial election was held on November 2, 1886, and featured incumbent Nebraska Lieutenant Governor Hibbard H. Shedd, a Republican, defeating Democratic nominee Charles J. Bowlby as well as Prohibition Party nominee E. B. Graham and National Union Party nominee M. K. Lewis. The National Union Party was founded just prior to the election of 1886 and appears to have been a precursor to the later populist movement in Nebraska. John Milton Thayer
John Milton Thayer (January 24, 1820March 19, 1906) was a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War and later a United States Senator from Nebraska, Governor of Wyoming Territory, and Governor of Nebraska. Early life Thayer was born in Bellingham, Massachusetts. He attended and taught in rural schools. He graduated from Brown University in 1841, and established a practice in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he was the editor of the ''Worcester Magazine'' and the ''Historical Journal''.
