''Library of Congress'' is a 1945 American short film, short documentary film about the Library of Congress, directed by Alexander Hammid, and produced by the Office of War Information. It was nominated for an Academy Awards, Academy Award for Academy Award for Best Documentary (Short Subject), Best Documentary Short. ''Library of Congress'' was restored from a 35mm nitrate print by the Academy Film Archive in 2006. The film is part of the Academy War Film Collection, one of the largest collections of World War II-era short films held outside government archives. Alexandr Hackenschmied, born Alexander Siegfried George Hackenschmied, known later as Alexander Hammid (17 December 1907 – 26 July 2004), was a Czechs, Czech-American photographer, film director, cinematographer and film editor. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1938 and became involved in American avant-garde cinema. He is best known for three films: ''Crisis (1939 film), Crisis'' (1939), ''Meshes of the Afternoon'' (1943) and ''To Be Alive!'' (1964). He made ''Meshes of the Afternoon'' with Maya Deren, to whom he was married from 1942 to 1947. His second marriage was to the photographer Hella Hammid, Hella Heyman, who had also collaborated with Hammid and Deren on several films. C-SPAN Video Library is the audio and video streaming website of C-SPAN, the American legislative broadcaster. The site offers a complete, freely accessible archive going back to 1987. It was launched in March 2010, and was integrated into the main C-SPAN website in 2013. The United States Office of War Information (OWI) was a United States government agency created during World War II. The OWI operated from June 1942 until September 1945. Through radio broadcasts, newspapers, posters, photographs, films and other forms of media, the OWI was the connection between the battlefront and civilian communities.
