Liberalism In Serbia
Liberalism in Serbia is limited to liberal parties with substantial support, mainly proved by having had a representation in parliament. The sign ⇒ denotes another party in that scheme. For inclusion in this scheme it is not necessary so that parties labeled themselves as a liberal party. Introduction Liberal parties were active in former Serbia and later in Yugoslavia. After the restoration of democracy liberal factions became active again. Count Čedomilj Mijatović ( sr-Cyrl, Чедомиљ Мијатовић; 17 October 1842 – May 14, 1932) was a Serbian statesman, economist, historian, writer and diplomat. Mijatović served as the Ministry of Finance (Serbia), Minister of Finance six times between 1873 and 1894 and as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Serbia), Minister of Foreign Affairs between 1880 and 1881 and again from 1888 to 1889. He was one of the leaders of the liberal Serbian Progressive Party (historical), Serbian Progressive Party. He also served as the Minister plenipotentiary of Serbia to the Court of St James's (1884–1885; 1895–1900, and 1902/1903), to Romania (1894), and the Ottoman Empire (1900). The Reformist Party (, RS), also known as the Reformists (Реформисти / Reformisti) was a minor Niš-based regionalist political party in Serbia. The Liberal Democratic Party (, abbr. LDP) is a liberal political party in Serbia. It is led by Čedomir Jovanović. History The Liberal Democratic Party was founded on 5 November 2005 by former members of the Democratic Party, led by Čedomir Jovanović, who were expelled in a party purge in 2004. Jovanović had become critical of the new direction of the Democratic Party and its newly elected president, Boris Tadić. Čedomir "Čeda" Jovanović ( sr-cyr, Чедомир Чеда Јовановић, ; born 13 April 1971) is a Serbian politician and businessman. During the presidency of Slobodan Milošević in Yugoslavia, Jovanović became one of the student leaders of the 1996–1997 protests in Serbia at the age of 25. Jovanović along with fellow student Čedomir Antić were one of the founding members of the "Student Political Club", abbreviated in Serbian as SPK, which successfully organised a massive boycott of the 1997 Serbian general election. In February 1998, the bulk of the SPK membership along with Jovanović himself joined the Democratic Party. After the overthrow of Slobodan Milošević, Jovanović was selected by the Democratic Opposition of Serbia to be one of its MPs, and he subsequently became the youngest parliamentary caucus leader in Serbian history, at the age of 29.
